MGOLF | Dons Sit in Eighth After Opening Round

ROCKY FACE, GA – The University of San Francisco men's golf team began its 2019-20 campaign on Friday morning finishing tied for eighth with a 12-over 300 competing against some of the top teams in the country at the Carpet Capital Intercollegiate hosted by Georgia Tech.

"Today was a very solid start," said head coach Jack Kennedy. Â "A lot more good things than bad things happened on the course today, we just need to stay patient and treat this as a regional and the results will come. Ultimately there's a lot of good things to build off and I'm excited to watch the guys get after it tomorrow."

The Dons placed three in the top-30 and are led by senior Tim Widing who finished his first round with a 1-over 73, good enough to share a tie at 14th. Widing opened the tournament with four birdies on the day, two on the front and a pair on the back.Â

Sophomores Matthew Anderson and Christoffer Palsson finished tied at 30th with dual 3-over 75s. Anderson, coming off an outstanding summer in which he competed at the RBC Canadian Open, began his year going bogey-bogey on 10 and 11 to open the round. However, he birdied 17 to finish three over on the first nine holes. He finished even on the back-9 after recording a birdie on seven.Â

Palsson had the hole of the day when he eagled the par-5 12th. He birdied 13th to go three under through the first four holes. Palsson finished the front-9 two-under. He ran into trouble on the back-9, but salvaged the round with a birdie on the par-5 ninth.Â

Alex Chin finished tied for 48th with a 5-over 77 to finish fourth for USF. Soren Lind finished behind him with a 6-over 78 which has him sitting tied for 56th after 18.

Host Georgia Tech is in the lead after the first day. The Yellow Jackets finished with a 4-under 284. The individual leader is South Carolina's Jamie Wilson who finished the day with a 4-under 68.

The tournament resumes tomorrow when USF tees off at 8:00 a.m. eastern on the first hole with Colorado State and Charlotte. Fans can follow the live results at Golfstat.com.
