SAN BRUNO, Calif. — University of San Francisco women's basketball sophomore forward Leilah Vigil was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week Monday for the week of Feb. 3-9 after posting back-to-back double-doubles, achieving a new career high and netting a game-winning basket.
Vigil turned in back-to-back double-doubles in two games last week and scored what was the eventual game-winning basket for the Dons on Saturday versus Loyola Marymount. She averaged 20.5 points and 13 rebounds per game during the week with her WCC-leading ninth and 10th double-doubles of the season. That included a career-high 27 points on Saturday versus the Lions.
With 8.6 seconds left and a tie game versus LMU on Saturday, Vigil drove right from the top of the key, split two defenders and made a layup off the glass that would stand and give the Dons a 70-68 victory.
She went 13 for 15 from the free-throw line Saturday to shoot 86.7% from the charity stripe on the week. From the floor, she was a 58.3% shooter (14 for 24), including a 70% showing on Thursday versus Pepperdine. She also threw in three assists, two steals and a block for the week.
Monday's honor is USF's second WCC POTW accolade this season, after Mikayla Williams shared the accolade for the week of Dec. 9-15.
The Dons travel to the Pacific Northwest this week to face WCC-leading Gonzaga on Thursday and Portland on Saturday. Fans can find all live coverage links on USFDons.com.
