BERKELEY, Calif. — The outdoor track season opened Saturday with pleasing early results for the University of San Francisco track teams, as the Dons competed at the Cal Opener at the University of California's Edwards Stadium.
The sprint crew saw plenty of top finishes and collegiate outdoor debuts. Freshman Rayne Anwar led the Dons in both the 100 meters (2nd, 12.29 seconds) and the 200 (5th, 25.59) in the first outdoor meet of her career. Fellow frosh Evelyn How also earned top-10 finishes with the same double, placing third in the 100 (12.40) and seventh in the 200.
"Rayne and Evelyn picked up right where they left off indoors in the sprints," said University of San Francisco Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Pat McCurry.
The Dons also had a strong showing in the 3,000, with four top-10 finishes and a couple of track debuts. Eve Jensen led the way for the group with a fourth-place finish in 10:06.39. Sophie Soefeldt landed on the track for the first time after skipping the indoor season, finishing right behind Jensen in fifth with a time of 10:12.70. Kalii Caldwell (6th, 10:17.89) and Josien Scheepens (7th, 10:19.62) also grabbed top-10 showings.
"It was a great little season opener," said McCurry. "It was nice to get Sophie Soefeldt back racing after missing the indoor season. We had some nice early work-piece races for some of the distance women, I liked the way we competed."
Four USF men ran in a large 1,500 field, placing three in the top-20. Andrew Snyder led the way with an eighth-place finish in 4:00.14, narrowly missing breaking the four-minute mark. Daniel Maneloveg was also in the top-10, running 4:01.46 for 10th place.
The NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships start Friday in Albuquerque, N.M., with Aoibhe Richardson representing the Dons in the women's 5,000 meters. The Dons hit the outdoor track again on Saturday in Davis at the Aggie Open.
