FAIRFAX, Calif. — The University of San Francisco women's golf team placed three in the top-15 and was just five back of the tournament leader after two rounds Monday at the Julie Inkster Invitational at the Meadow Club.
San Francisco finished the first two rounds at 11-over (587), only five strokes back of the team leader Washington State, who finished the two rounds with a six-over 582. The Dons sit tied with Oregon State, who also shot 587, and are four back of second-place California, who shot seven-over 583.
"I am so proud of the resiliency of this team," said San Francisco Head Coach Sara Doell. "After a very difficult start to the spring, we have come together to work hard and put ourselves into a great position heading into the final round."
Junior Pearl Rojanapeansatith led the Dons on the first day of the tournament with a two-under 142, posting back-to-back rounds of 71 on the par-72 course to stand tied for fourth overall on the individual leaderboard. She had five birdies in the first round, including three on the back nine. She had three more in the second, including on nine for the second time. She finished tied for second with eight birdies on the day.
"Pearl played great today shooting a pair of 71s and had such a tremendous mindset all day," said Doell.
Sophomore Annika Borelli and senior Samantha Gong both finished tied for 12th in the individual race, shooting a two-round total of three-over 147. Borelli was tied for third overall after a two-under 70 in the first round that included four birdies, but she fell back to a 12th-place tie after a 77 in round two. Gong was outside the top-20 following the first round, but gained 10 spots in the standings when she shot a one-over 73 in round two.
Junior Joan Soewondo improved her score from round one to round two by six strokes, gaining 16 spots in the standings and sitting tied for 38th after the first day. Her 79 in round one was quickly forgotten when she shot a one-over 73 in the second, which included four birdies. Freshman Toni Sottile did the same thing, cutting her first-round 80 down to a 74 in the second round, including three birdies.
Sophomore Jade Siphomsay finished tied for 58th with a two-round total of 157. Freshman Hannah Zeman finished tied for 64th with a first-day total of 158.
San Francisco will complete play at the Juli Inkster Invitational on Tuesday with third-round action starting at 8:30 a.m.
