MGOLF | Dons Shoot Low Round to Capture Fourth

TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of San Francisco men's golf team closed out the Arizona Intercollegiate with a strong final round, shooting a low round even par 284 to finish the tournament in fourth place at 20-over 872 (306-282-284) at the par-71 Sewailo Golf Club.

Tournament host Arizona took home the team honors after finishing with a 2-under 850 (284-275-291). Wake Forrest took second, followed by New Mexico in third, just four strokes ahead of the Dons.

"Today was the finish of a great week," said head coach Jack Kennedy. "While we had some hard times on the course, the important thing is we were together as a team competing! The sky is the limit for this group and we will continue to get better. Everyone contributed this week which is a sign of our depth. We can't wait to get to LA next week to tee it up again."

USF once again finished with three in the top-30, and two in the top-15. Tim Widing climbed up 15 spots to finish tied for seventh after shooting a 2-under 69 on the final round. For the tournament, Widing scored a 2-over 215 (76-70-69). The seventh-place finish is Widing's 20th career top-10 finish and the two rounds under par give him 59 rounds at par or better for his brilliant career.

Widing opened the round going bogey-bogey on six and seven and then was flawless the rest of the day. Back-to-back birdies on eight and nine had him going into the 10th hole at even par. Six-straight pars preceded a birdie on 16. He finished the round with six more pars and a birdie on the fifth to finish the round.

Matthew Anderson also moved up the board on the final day. The third year finished tied for 14th finishing the tournament with a 4-over 217 (76-71-70). Like Widing, Anderson was better every round, finishing the final round with a 1-under 70. In the final 18, Anderson finished with four birdies giving him nine for the tournament which put him tied with Christoffer Palsson for the team lead.

Soren Lind finished tied for 28th with a 7-over 220 (75-71-74). Christoffer Palsson finished six spots behind Lind at 34th. Palsson finished the tournament with a 2-over 73 to finish with a 9-over 222 (79-70-73).

Toby Briggs had his best round, finishing with 17 pars to finish with a 1-over 72. For the tournament Briggs finished with a 14-over 227 (80-75-72) to finish with teammate Alex Chin at 69th.  Chin, shot a 1-over 72 to finish the tournament 78-77-72.

Arizona's Brad Reeves was the individual medalist, finishing with a 4-unnder 209 (68-69-72).Â

The Dons will return to action on Feb. 8 when they play the first and second round of the Cal State Fullerton hosted tournament.
