MGOLF | Dons Back in Action at Orange County Collegiate Classic

The University of San Francisco men's golf team returns to action this week when they travel to Coto de Caza, Calif., for participate in the Orange County Collegiate Classic co-hosted by Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine at the Coto de Caza Golf Course.

The Course
The 54-hole tournament will take place on the par 72 - 6,950 yard, Coto de Caza South Course. Two consecutive 18-hole rounds will be played on Monday, with the final 18 holes played on Tuesday. The Coto de Caza South Course is a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. design, and is noted for its tight fairways and challenging doglegs.
The Field (7)
A smaller field than last year's tournament should make for speedier play. Joining the Dons this year will be hosts Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine as well as Southern California schools Cal Baptist, Cal Poly, and UC San Diego. As well as Grand Canyon from Arizona.
Tournament History
The Dons won this tournament last year in dramatic fashion. The final around featured five eagles, two aces and a miraculous finish on the 18th to give the Dons their first team championship since April 2018. After finishing in second after the first round and taking first after 36 holes, the Dons held off a hard charting Titans team over the final 18. The exciting finish culminated on 18. Cal State Fullerton's Derek Castillo, the individual champion, birdied 17 and 18 to give the Titans a two-stroke lead with Widing putting for eagle. Left with a 16-foot eagle putt, Widing holed it out to preserve the win for the Dons. It was Widing's second eagle of the back-9.

USF will trot out the same lineup from last week: Tim Widing, Matthew Anderson, Soren Lind, Christoffer Palsson, and Toby Briggs. Alex Chin will once again be competing as an individual. Last time out, the Dons captured fourth at the Arizona Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Arizona. It was a strong showing for the Dons in a field that featured several teams from the Pac-12. Tim Widing led the Dons finishing in seventh place, his 20th career top-10 finish.
