Dons Drop Season Finale in Moraga

MORAGA, Calif. – Closing out their season on the road at University Credit Union Pavilion, the University of San Francisco volleyball team (0-25, 0-17) fell to Saint Mary's 915-12, 9-9), 3-0, on Tuesday night.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • With the Gaels taking an early 5-2 lead to start the match, the Dons responded to draw within two, 7-5, following consecutive kills from Katie Wagstaff and Kellen Martins. Exchanging points through the middle of the first set, USF stayed close, 18-15, following a 4-0 run, which included kills from Kutakhina and a service ace from Bruna Correa. Closing out the set, the Dons continued to show their fight by using their second 4-0 run to cut their deficit to one, 24-23, but Saint Mary's would ultimately find the clinching point to grab the first match point, 25-23.
  • Finding their groove offensively, the Gaels jumped out to an 11-0 advantage to begin set two. Aiming to climb back once again, the Dons trimmed the score to 20-11 as the set played on following a kill and service ace from Aylen Ayub, but Saint Mary's held on shortly thereafter to take the second match point, 25-12.
  • Similar to the second set, SMC continued their momentum by taking a 13-4 to start set three. Not going down without a battle, the Dons answered with a 7-2 stretch to come within three, 16-13. However, the Gaels then regrouped to defend their home court by reeling off a 9-4 run of their own to close the set, 25-17, and sweep the match, 3-0.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Leading the way in her final collegiate match, Sophie Sydenham paced the Dons offensively with six kills, marking the sixth time the Scottsdale native tallied at least five kills in a match this season.
  • For Ayub, the setter tallied 23 assists against the Gaels, marking the twelfth time this fall she has notched at least 20 assists.
  • Logging two final aces on Tuesday, Correa finishes the season as the team leader in service aces with 15.
