STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of San Francisco women's soccer team made its return to the pitch after 15 months and came away with the clean sheet. The Dons had eight players make their debut in the 1-0 shutout of host Pacific at Knoles Field on Wednesday.
Freshman
Kaya Pigoni notched her first collegiate coal in the 66
th minute to break the scoreless tie. Pigoni took a pass from fellow freshman
Isabelle Esparza and launched a shot past Pacific (0-2) keeper Brenna Crump.
USF's (1-0) attack was all over the Tigers on Wednesday but just couldn't find the back of the net. USF tallied 19 shots with 11 on goal. Senior
Ashley Humphrey led the Dons with four shots, one on goal. Freshman
Marissa Vasquez had three shots with two on target. Ten different players recorded a shot on goal for USF.
"It was great to see the kids get out on the park after 15 months, we are delighted and very happy to be out there," said head coach
Jim Millinder. "Molly was solid, always nice to get a clean sheet. I thought our back four were tremendous.
Kaya Pigoni ripped one for her first career goal. Overall, I thought we played well. We had our changes today. A team like that we need to put away. Their keeper played extremely well and kept them in the game. Pacific has always been a tough place for us to play. It was a great start back for the program."
Eby (1-0), earns her first shutout since October 7, 2018 when the Dons defeated LMU 1-0. It is her fifth career shutout. She notched a pair of saves, but didn't see much action on the day. The Dons' backline was all over the Tigers' attack and limited Pacific to just eight shots on the only day, with only two on goal.
USF opened the game with 10 shots in the first half and another nine in the second. Pacific managed just four in each half.
Crump tallied eight saves before Pigoni finally sent one to the back of the net, she finished with 10 total.
The Dons will return to action on Sunday when they travel to Moraga, Calif., for a non-conference match against the Gaels. That game is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
