SAN FRANCISCO — The University of San Francisco men's tennis team dropped a 5-0 decision to 27th-ranked Pepperdine Saturday in a West Coast Conference match at the California Tennis Club.
The Dons (5-5, 0-3 WCC) nearly won the doubles point to start. Johan Garpered and Paul Giraud got USF started on the right foot with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles over Pepperdine's Pietro Fellin and Robert Shelton. But the Waves (8-4, 2-0 WCC) came back with wins at No. 2 and No. 1 doubles to grab the doubles point and an early 1-0 match lead.
Pepperdine took the top three singles spots, as well as a win at No. 6 singles to clinch the match. Corrado Summaria beat the Dons' Mitch Johnson, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6. Guy Den Ouden beat Ori Maior, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 3 singles. And Adrian Oetzbach – the No. 55-ranked singles player in the country – clinched the match victory for Pepperdine with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles.
"Pepperdine was too good for us today," said San Francisco head coach JT Sundling. "They were able to convert on the opportunities they created and didn't give us any room to breathe. We look forward to our next match versus Saint Mary's."
The Dons next face Saint Mary's on the road in Moraga at 2 p.m. Friday.
