HENDERSON, Nev. — Annika Borrelli sat four strokes back of the individual lead in sixth place, there were two Dons among the top-15, and the University of San Francisco women's golf team was in fourth place after the first round of the 2021 West Coast Conference Championship at Reflection Bay Golf Club.
Borrelli finished the day with a two-over 74, four strokes behind clubhouse leader Allysha Mae Mateo of BYU, who shot a two-under 70. Borrelli was one under par and tied for the lead through nine, but the back nine gave a number of players fits Thursday. Four of the five players in front of her had at least one bogey or double bogey on the first round's back nine.
"Annika played really great golf today," said San Francisco head coach Sara Doell. "Even with two bogeys coming in at the end, she is still within striking distance of the lead."
Joan Soewondo gave USF two players among the top-15 Thursday, shooting five-over 77 to sit tied for 15th. Hannah Zeman was only one stroke behind in 17th place after a round of 78. Pearl Rojanapeansatith and Toni St. John both shot 80 on day one to sit tied for 20th.
"The team worked hard today and represented us very well," said Doell. "The scores are certainly not emblematic of our talent or potential. We had a great conversation at the end of the round about what we need to do tomorrow to bounce back."
San Francisco was in fourth place after a team total of 309 (+21). It was 10 strokes behind third-place Pepperdine (299, +11) and 26 strokes behind team leader BYU (293, +5).
"We're looking forward to the opportunity to move up the leaderboard tomorrow," added Doell.
The Dons will tee off starting at 7 a.m. Friday, matched up alongside Santa Clara. Fans can find live coverage links on USFDons.com.
