Volleyball Set to Travel to San Jose State, Host UCSD

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Playing in their final non-conference matches of the season, the University of San Francisco volleyball team (0-6) will aim to secure their first victory of the year in matchups against San Jose State (4-4) and UC San Diego (2-7) on Thursday and Friday.

DONS AT A GLANCE:
  • Last time out, the Dons fell to CSU Bakersfield, 3-1, and Utah State, 3-0, as co-hosts of the Bay Area Invitational. Notably, freshman Taylor Schein tied her career-high with 11 kills against the Roadrunner while Orsula Staka's five blocks against the Aggies set a new season-high for the Croatian.
  • Individually, Staka currently sits third in the WCC in hitting percentage (.387) while Letizia Aquilino is fifth in digs per set (3.60).
  • Beginning their season away from home, the Dons will play their fifth road contest in just seven matches so far when they travel to San Jose State on Thursday.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS:
  • In their last time on the court, San Jose State went 0-3 in matchups with Colorado, Northern Colorado and Texas Tech at the Buffs Invitational in Boulder, Colo.
  • Delivering a noteworthy performance for the Spartans, Sarah Smevog was named to the Buffs Invitational All-Tournament team after averaging 4.30 digs and 1.40 assists per set last weekend.
  • For Latahevai Lousi, the countdown is on to reach 1,000 career kills as she enters the week needing just 8 to reach the milestone. Sitting at 992 kills, Lousi moved into 15th place all-time in kills last Saturday and would be the 15th player in school history to record 1,000 career kills.
SCOUTING THE TRITONS:
  • Competing in the University of New Mexico Tournament last weekend, UC San Diego defeated Southeastern Louisiana, 3-1, and the host Lobos, 3-0, despite dropping their first match to Seattle U, 3-0.
  • Following the completion of the tournament, libero Naya Dong was named the Big West Defensive Player of the Week. Overall, Dong averaged a team-high 4.9 digs/set en route to being named to the all-tournament team. Notably, she set a match- and career-high with 24 digs against Southeastern Louisiana to help the Tritons clinch their first victory at the NCAA Division I level. In a sweep of unbeaten New Mexico, Dong totaled 16 digs while also finishing with nine digs their loss.
  • Officially arriving in Division I and the Big West this fall, Dong is the first UC San Diego volleyball player to win a weekly award from the Big West Conference. 
SERIES HISTORY:
  • Dating back to 2002, the Dons hold a 6-2 record against the Spartans in eight matches, including a 3-2 win in the most recent match in San Jose on Sept. 12, 2007.
  • Against the Tritons, USF also possesses a 6-2 record as the Dons swept UCSD in straight sets, 3-0, in their last matchup in San Francisco on Nov. 25, 2008.
