Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Dons, Bears Draw Even in Shortened Match

WACO, Texas- Playing in their second match of a two-game road stretch, the University of San Francisco women's soccer team (3-3-2) finished in a 1-1 draw at Baylor (4-2-3) on Sunday afternoon after the match was called at 70 minutes due to an extreme heat advisory.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Wasting out of the gates, Marissa Vasquez fired the first shot of the match at 2:41, but missed just above the top crossbar.
  • As the two sides exchanged shots in the minutes to follow, the Dons would get on the board first in the 27th minute when Jamesen Ward delivered a perfect pass to Sydney Cooper, who then put home her third goal of the season to give USF the 1-0 lead.
  • Although the Dons tallied one more shot before the half off the foot of Elle Soleau, the defense of USF shined to close the half as their 1-0 advantage held up heading into the locker room.
  • Out of the break, the Bears responded by finding momentum offensively as they tied the match at one on a goal from Mackenzie Anthony at the 48:29 mark.
  • As the match played on, USF would have opportunities to jump on top as Samantha Curwood Wagner and Kaylin Lunsford (2) each attempted shots on the opposing goal, but the Dons could not convert to find the go-ahead point.
  • With the temperatures continuing to climb, officials would eventually call the match due to an extreme heat advisory at the start of the 71st minute. According to NCAA Division I rules, a game that has gone past the 70thminute is considered a complete contest unless it is a postseason match, which must play the full 90 minutes.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • For Cooper, the San Clemente native now holds the team lead in goals (3) and total points (6). Notably, she also sits second on the team in shots on goal with seven.
  • Hitting her stride, Ward's assist on Sunday ties her with Vasquez for the team lead with two.
  • In the cage, Molly Eby tallied three saves against the Bears, marking the fourth consecutive match the Portland native has reached this number and the seventh time in eight games this season.
POSTGAME WITH COACH MILLINDER:
"I thought we did a good job overall as a team, we battled as long as we can… It was extremely hot out there and once it gets past a certain index, we have a responsibility to call it. We tried to get it to 70 minutes so it counted as an official game, which was a good thing we did. Overall, Cooper had a great goal to put us ahead early, it was a great run by Jamesen and she delivered a beautiful ball, so overall solid performances from them. Kaylin Lunsford also played a strong game for us… Defense did well overall considering the circumstances, Molly as well in goal. I thought in the second half we kind of took the game over, we had some quality chances to score that we were close to converting on before it got called. I'm just proud of the girls for going out and competing that hard for that long in this heat, it was no joke."

UP NEXT:
