SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – After a successful four years on the Hilltop, Khalil Shabazz has elected to utilize his final year of eligibility as the two-time All-WCC guard will return to USF this upcoming season to cap off his career as a Don.
"Khalil embodies what being a USF Don is all about," said head coach Chris Gerlufsen. "He's poured his blood, sweat and tears into our basketball program and the USF community and has impacted winning on a daily basis. He represents everything that is good about college basketball and I couldn't be happier about having the opportunity to coach him for one more year!"
Building on his success each year on the Hilltop, Shabazz enjoyed a stellar year on the hardwood in 2021-22 as the Seattle native finished second in the WCC in total steals (55) and steals per game (1.8) while also ranking fifth in made three-pointers (68). Shooting efficiently when on the floor, Shabazz also finished seventh in the conference in free-throw percentage (84.6) and twelfth in made field goals (140). Set to graduate with his communications degree in a few weeks, Shabazz also ranks amongst the program's all-time greats as he is currently third all-time in three-pointers made (193) and three-pointers attempted (558) as well as fourth all-time in total steals (159). Rewarded for his efforts, Shabazz was named to the 2021-22 All-WCC Second Team.
Off the court, Shabazz was recently selected as one of twelve members for the 20th Annual Division I-AAA-ADA Scholar-Athlete Team. Each nominee is required to maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletics credentials. Nominees must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games listed on the nomination form. To be eligible for nomination to the Scholar-Athlete Team, individuals must have reached junior academic standing at their respective institution.
In October 2020, the NCAA Division I Council extended eligibility and granted an additional season of competition for winter sport student-athletes.
