SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Head coach
Chris Gerlufsen and the University of San Francisco men's basketball program is proud to announce the commitment of Georgia Tech transfer Saba Gigiberia.
"Saba will be an intriguing player for us here at USF," said Gerlufsen. "He has the unique combination of size/skill and has the ability to impact the game in a number of different ways. He should mesh well into our system, as we love bigs with the ability to dribble, pass and shoot. He's been well coached and has been exposed to a high level of basketball, both internationally and here in the US at both Prolific Prep and Georgia Tech. We can't wait to get to work with him here on the Hilltop!"
Appearing in 15 games at Georgia Tech in 2021-22, the 7'1" center averaged 7.8 minutes, 2.5 points and 2.3 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets. On Jan. 19, 2022, Gigiberia received his first career start against Wake Forest, when he scored a career-high eight points in addition to logging a career-high 16:47 on the court.
In 2020-21, Gigiberia played short minutes in eight games, with a high of 10:01 against Delaware State on Dec. 20, 2020.
Originally from the Republic of Georgia, Gigiberia was a four-star post prospect who played his final two years of high school basketball in the United States. Known for his basketball IQ, Gigiberia can play with his back to the basket or facing the basket, with skills as a passer and ability to step out on the perimeter. With a 7-foot-4 wingspan, he originally grew up playing rugby, but said his grandfather encouraged him to switch to basketball at 12 because of his height. Developing well and earning a spot with a club in Spain at 14 years old, he played in Spain for two years before leaving for the U.S. at age 16.
After attending Findlay Prep in Las Vegas as a junior, Gigiberia played his final year of high school at Prolific Preparatory School in Napa, Calif., for coach Joey Fuca. During his senior season, he was ranked as high as No. 72 nationally (247Sports) and No. 14 at his position. Overall, the versatile big man averaged 8.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots in 2019-20 at Prolific Prep.
Internationally, Gigiberia played for his home country of Georgia in the FIBA U16 European Division B Championship in 2017 and in the FIBA U18 European Division B Championship.
