Dons Add Sharpshooter Tyrell Roberts

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Head coach Chris Gerlufsen and the University of San Francisco men's basketball program are proud to announce the commitment of Washington State transfer Tyrell Roberts.

"I am thrilled to announce the signing of Tyrell Roberts to the University of San Francisco," said Gerlufsen. "Ty possesses all of the qualities that we value here as a staff. He's a competitor and a leader. He has achieved at a high level over the course of his career, being named a Division II All-American while at UCSD and being a double figure scorer this past season at Washington State. Ty will bring an electric style of play that will pair nicely with an already talented backcourt. His team-first attitude and work ethic will make his teammates better. We can't wait to get him on campus and get to work!"

Playing in 36 of 37 contests while starting 31 games for the Cougars last season, Roberts finished second on the team with 11.4 ppg in 2021-22. Overall, the versatile guard shot 92.5 percent (49-53) from the charity stripe to set a new single-season program record for free-throw percentage. During Washington State's run in this year's NIT, Roberts cashed in a career-best 7-of-16 from behind-the-arc in their opening round matchup against Santa Clara as the Sacramento native finished the tournament with fourteen made triples, the most all-time in a postseason appearance for WSU. In the classroom, Roberts was named to the Pac-12 Winter Academic Honor Roll.

Prior to his time in Pullman, Roberts was an elite shooter who dominated at the Division II level as he earned All-American honors at UC San Diego before transferring to Washington State. Before opting out of the 2020-21 season, Roberts scored over 1,000 points (1,042) in just two seasons for the Tritons, averaging 16.5 points per game in 63 contests while shooting 41.1 percent from behind-the-arc. As a sophomore in 2019-20, Roberts was named the CCAA Most Valuable Player after averaging 19.2 ppg on 48.0 percent (205-427) shooting, which included a scorching 46.3 percent (111-240) from deep. Proving to be unstoppable at times, Roberts also scored a CCAA Tournament record 45 points in a semifinal contest against Cal State East Bay to lead the Tritons to the tournament's championship game, hitting 10-of-12 from distance. Notably, these 45 points are the second-most all-time in UCSD history and the third-most scored in the history of the CCAA. In addition to his scoring, Roberts displayed his vision by averaging just under 3.0 assists per game in two seasons while posting a 1.7 assist/turnover ratio.

In high school, Roberts enjoyed success at Woodcreek High School in Roseville, where he led his team to the San Joaquin Division I Sectional, NorCal Open Division, and Sierra Foothill League championships as a senior.
