SANTA BARBARA, Calif. –
Jasmine Gayles scored a career-high 30 points as the University of San Francisco women's basketball team (0-1) dropped its season opener, falling to UC Santa Barbara (1-0), 87-75, Tuesday evening at The Thunderdome.
IN CASE YOU MISSED:
- San Francisco began the game slow as UC Santa Barbara jumped out to an early 12-3 lead at the 6:43 mark of the first quarter. The deficit continued to grow throughout the opening period, with the Gauchos holding a 31-14 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
- The Dons continued to fall behind throughout the remainder of the first half and trailed by 19, 53-34, at the halftime break.
- The third quarter saw a spark in offensive and defensive production from San Francisco as the team began to cut into the deficit. The Dons came out of the break and used a 14-2 scoring run, led by eight points from Gayles, to cut the Gauchos' lead to single digits, 56-48, at the 5:26 mark of the period.
- Forcing the Gauchos into eight turnovers throughout the third quarter, the Dons finished off the period strong as two late free throws from Luana Leite brought the Dons within six, 66-60.
- The rally continued into the final quarter of play as the Dons got as close as four points multiple times during the fourth quarter. The Gauchos, however, held on and secured the 12-point win, 87-75.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Gayles shot 40 percent (10-for-25) from the field, recording her first-ever 30-point performance. Gayles, who surpassed her previous best of 28 points set on January 15, 2022, at Santa Clara, added five assists, one steal, and connected on three of her nine three-point attempts.
- Debora dos Santos recorded her fifth-career double-double as she posted 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Dos Santos shot 63 percent (five-for-eight) from the floor and collected four offensive rebounds.
- In her first game as a member of the Dons, Freja Werth scored nine points, recorded two three-point baskets and collected four rebounds.
