Gayles Named WCC Player of the Week for the Second Time

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – After leading the University of San Francisco women's basketball team to two league wins last week, Jasmine Gayles has been named Credit Union 1 West Coast Conference Player of the Week for the second time, announced by the conference Monday morning.

Highlighted by a career-high 40 points in a double-digit win at Pacific on Saturday, Jan. 13, Gayles averaged 29.0 points per game while shooting at a 46.9 percent (15-for-32) clip during the second week of league play. Gayles also posted 18 points at home in a win over Pepperdine on Thursday, Jan. 11, putting the Dons back in the win column after falling to Portland on the Hilltop a week prior.

Overall, she also added six rebounds and seven assists across the two games.

Becoming only the second player in program history to reach the 40-point threshold in a game, Gayles was three points shy of setting a new single-game scoring record, currently held by Teri Hunt, who totaled 42 points against San Diego during the 1986-87 season.

In the come-from-behind win at Pacific, Gayles shot a season-high 60 percent (nine-for-15) from the field and connected on 17 of a career-high 22 free throw attempts in 40 minutes of action. The graduate student from Seattle, Wash., scored 28 second-half points, connecting on three of her four three-point attempts to help the green and gold erase a 12-point third-quarter deficit.

Gayles ranks first in the WCC in scoring after four league contests, averaging 25.3 points per game. In 17 games, Gayles leads the team and ranks third in the conference, averaging 17.8 points per game.

San Francisco returns to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20, when it travels to take on Santa Clara at Leavey Center.
