SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco women's basketball team (2-3) dropped a narrow decision to Boise State (5-0), falling 59-57 Thursday afternoon at Chase Center.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Opening up the game, San Francisco scored seven of the first nine points, capped off with a Freja Werth three-point basket, giving the Dons a 7-2 lead at 8:42.
- Boise State closed the gap shortly after, recording four straight points with Elodie Lalotte connecting on a layup attempt to bring the Broncos to 7-6 at the 6:43 mark of the first.
- The Dons extended their advantage in the following minutes, with Werth adding a layup with 1:19 remaining to give the green and gold an eight-point lead, 15-7.
- Dani Bayes closed the quarter with a three-point play, connecting on a layup while drawing the foul at 1:08. Knocking down the free throw, Bayes trimmed the Broncos' deficit to five, 15-10, at the end of the first quarter.
- San Francisco continued to hold the lead until the 2:09 mark of the second quarter, when Boise State recorded a two-point basket to take a 27-25 advantage. Trading baskets in the final minutes of the half, Luana Leite recorded a driving layup with nine seconds left to give the Dons a 30-29 lead.
- Regaining the lead at the start of the third quarter, Mary Kay Naro eased to the basket for a layup to give Boise State a one-point edge, 31-30, with two minutes off the clock. The Broncos held the narrow lead throughout the third, as the Dons trailed by as much as five points three times.
- Trailing by five, 45-40, with just over a minute to go, Werth and Lorena Barbosa connected on back-to-back two-point field goals to get the Dons to within one, 45-44, at the end of the quarter.
- Boise State took control of the game in the fourth quarter, jumping ahead by seven, 56-49, its largest lead, with Abby Muse completing a three-point play at 4:59.
- San Francisco began to chip away late in the game, cutting the deficit to one, 56-55, following a 6-0 scoring run. Three players scored during the run, highlighted by Werth knocking down a second-chance three-pointer at 4:05.
- Despite a late push at the end, with Barbosa going one-for-two at the free-throw line with nine seconds left, the Dons failed to score on their final possession, falling to the Broncos by a slim margin.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Werth led San Francisco in scoring, scoring a game-high 18 points on 58.3 percent (seven-for-12) shooting. Connecting on all four of her attempts from distance, Werth also added five rebounds and one steal.
- Scoring a season-high nine points off the bench, Barbosa shot a stellar 66.6 percent (four-for-six) from the field in 13 minutes of action.
- Beginning to return to form, Leite scored six points, adding five rebounds and four assists. Defensively, she led the team in steals with two.
