Dons Conclude Road Trip, Drop Narrow Decision at Northern Arizona

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The University of San Francisco women's basketball team (2-6) dropped its final contest of a three-game road swing, falling at Northern Arizona (9-2) 92-83 Saturday afternoon at Rolle Activity Center.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • Following a driving layup by Freja Werth to open the scoring in the first quarter, Northern Arizona responded with nine unanswered points to take a commanding 9-2 lead at 7:52.
  • The Lumberjacks continued to score while shooting at a high percentage, pushing their advantage to 14, 23-9, with under two minutes remaining in the period.
  • A 9-0 scoring run concluded the first quarter, as the Dons knocked down three straight three-pointers to trim the deficit to five, 23-18. Emma Trawally Porta kickstarted the run with her second long ball of the opening 10 minutes, while Werth connected on back-to-back attempts, including a corner three with 46 seconds remaining.
  • Using the three-point line to her advantage at the start of the second quarter, Werth posted another tally from distance, bringing the Dons to within two, 23-21, at 9:10.
  • Northern Arizona bounced back with a 16-7 scoring run in the following (insert time) to push its lead back to double-digits, 39-28, at 5:46. The Lumberjacks held their double-digit advantage throughout the remainder of the half, leading 55-41, at the halftime break.
  • At the start of the third, Sophie Glancey pushed the Lumberjacks' lead to 16, 57-41 with two free throws. Lorena Barbosa responded with a three-point play, knocking down her first field goal with a foul, adding the free throw to cut the deficit to 57-44 at the 9:08 minute mark.
  • Exchanging points in the third period, Northern Arizona held its lead, tallying a 7-0 scoring run to go up 72-54 with three minutes left. San Francisco responded with an 8-3 scoring run, highlighted by six made free throws to end the quarter as the Dons trailed 76-
  • Going back and forth at the start of the last quarter, San Francisco managed to get to within 10, following field goals from Barbosa, Trawally Porta, and Werth. Werth finished the comeback effort with five straight points, capped off with a long three-pointer to bring the Dons to within 82-72 at 5:41.
  • Angeliki Ziaka tallied the game's final points with a driving layup for the green and gold as Northern Arizona held on for a 92-83 victory. 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Four players scored in double figures, led by Werth's game-high 23 points. Werth shot a stellar 53.3 percent (eight-for-15) from the field while knocking down a season-best five three-pointers.
  • Trawally Porta added a season-high 20 points, reaching the 20-point threshold for the first time as a Don. She was efficient from the floor, connecting on 72.7 percent (eight-for-11) of her shots, with four coming from the three-point line.
  • Scoring in double figures for the first time in her career, Barbosa recorded 16 points while registering a 77.8 free-throw percentage (seven-for-nine).
  • Recording a near double-double, Ziaka posted 14 points and a game-high eight assists. Defensively, Ziaka added one steal and led the Dons with two blocks.
  • As a team, San Francisco reached a new high in total three-pointers made this season with 10, while shooting 41.6 percent from distance.
