SAN DIEGO, Calif. –
Jasmine Gayles and
Debora dos Santos posted their second-consecutive 20-point performances as the University of San Francisco women's basketball team (9-13, 5-4) dropped a lopsided battle to San Diego (5-17, 1-8), falling 77-67 Saturday afternoon at Jenny Craig Pavilion.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- San Francisco got off to a fast start, scoring the game's first six points to grab a 6-0 advantage at the 8:25 mark of the opening quarter. Gayles scored on the Dons' first two possessions, and Luana Leite added a bucket of her own to spark the run.
- San Diego responded shortly after with a 6-0 run, tying the game at the halfway mark of the first quarter.
- Following two baskets from both teams to knot the game at 10 at the 2:36 mark, the Toreros regained the lead and used a 7-2, ending the quarter with a 17-12 advantage.
- Leading throughout the entire second quarter, San Diego controlled the pace of play and built on its lead. The Toreros extended their lead to double-digits near the end of the quarter, leading 31-20 with 3:27 remaining.
- Trailing 13, 38-25, with 1:13 remaining, Gayles and Leite propelled the Dons on a 4-0 run to cut the deficit to single digits, 38-29 at the halftime break. Gayles buried two free throws, and Leite connected on a driving layup with 0.9 left in the quarter to get the Dons within nine.
- San Diego continued to control the pace of play in the third, pushing its lead back to double-digits, 40-39, with the first basket of the quarter.
- The Toreros answered every Don scoring run in the third quarter and continued to hold onto their lead. With 19 seconds left, Gayles cut the deficit to nine, 56-47, with a driving layup, but the Toreros with a pull-up jumper to go back up 11, 58-47, at the end of the period.
- San Francisco began to chip away at the deficit midway through the fourth quarter, with Freja Werth kickstarting a comeback with a three-pointer to bring the Dons within eight, 58-50.
- San Diego, however, answered with a 7-2 run, extending its lead to double-digits, 65-52 at the 8:20 mark of the fourth.
- Gayles found a rhythm from the three-point line shortly after, knocking down back-to-back three-pointers to trim the Torero advantage to seven, 65-58, at the 6:29 mark. Dos Santos added two free throws later on to cap off the Dons' 8-0 run, getting the team within five, 65-60, the closest the game would be for the rest of the afternoon.
- San Diego continued to get to the rim, scoring its remaining seven field goals on layups, and ballooned the lead to double-digits.
- San Francisco cut the deficit to seven, 73-66, on a Gayles driving layup, but San Diego answered with a 4-0 run in the final 46 seconds to earn the 77-66 victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Gayles led San Francisco in scoring with 22 points while knocking down a game-high three three-pointers in 38 minutes of action.
- Recording her 13th double-double of the season, dos Santos added 20 points and 11 rebounds for the green and gold throughout the contest. Thriving at the free-throw line, dos Santos connected on all eight attempts from the charity stripe, setting a new career high.
