3/17/2024 6:30:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Heading back to the postseason for the second time in three seasons, the University of San Francisco men's basketball team will officially face Cincinnati in the first round of the 2024 National Invitation Tournament (NIT).
Led by five Dons who earned All-WCC honors this season, the Dons will travel to Cincinnati to take on the 2-seeded Bearcats on Wednesday, Mar. 20 at 6:00 pm PT/9:00 pm ET. The contest will air live on ESPN+ and KNBR 1050 at game time.
With this appearance, the green and gold appear in the NIT field for the first time since 2013-14 when USF finished 21-12 overall and 13-5 in conference play to place third in the final WCC regular season standings. Notably, San Francisco won the NIT tournament in 1949 as the Dons took down Loyola Chicago at Madison Square Garden to finish 25-5 overall.
Overall, second year head coach Chris Gerlufsen has guided the 2023-24 Dons to a 23-10 record, which included an 11-5 mark and a third-place finish in conference action. Impressively, USF eclipsed the 20-win mark for the seventh straight season (excluding the COVID-19 season in 2020-21). USF's eleven conference victories are tied for the second-most since 1981-82. Individually, five Dons - Jonathan Mogbo (Newcomer of the Year + First Team), Ryan Beasley (Freshman of the Year + Freshman Team), Marcus Williams (First Team), Ndewedo Newbury (Honorable Mention) and Malik Thomas (Honorable Mention) - earned All-WCC honors this season, setting a new program record.
Wednesday's winner will play the victor of Bradley and Loyola Chicago. First round games begin Tuesday, Mar. 19 and Wednesday, Mar. 20 followed by second round games on Saturday, Mar. 23 and Sunday, Mar. 24. The quarterfinal games are Mar. 26 + 27 with the NIT Final Four taking place in Indianapolis from Apr. 2-4.
