Tim Riley Steps Down as Cross Country/Track and Field Head Coach

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - After six years leading the University of San Francisco cross country and track and field programs, Tim Riley will be stepping down from his position as head coach on July 12 due to new professional opportunities within his family.

"He has been an incredible asset to the University of San Francisco, its cross country and track and field programs and the student-athletes under his tutelage," Director of Athletics Larry Williams said. "As a humble leader with a deep commitment to the development of the whole person, he actualizes numerous Jesuit values. The men and women with whom he has worked have excelled in competition and are thriving in their civic, professional and personal lives."

During his tenure on the Hilltop, Riley guided each program to national success, including coaching 10 NCAA National Championship individual qualifiers in cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field. Under his guidance, he led the women's cross country program to the 2021 NCAA Championship for the sixth time in program history, coached five NCAA All-Americans and had 18 student-athletes compete in the NCAA Track and Field National Championship First-Round Qualifiers.

"For the past six years, it has been a privilege to be part of this program, especially the last three at the helm," Riley said. "I want to thank Joan McDermott for having faith in me to lead this program, Larry Williams, my incredible staff and our student-athletes who have continued the tradition of excellence in competition and in the classroom that this program is known for."

San Francisco also succeeded in the classroom under his leadership as both men's and women's programs earned NCAA All-Academic Cross Country recognition a combined eight times in addition to an average grade-point average of 3.62.

In his first cross country season in 2018, Riley helped lead the men's program to a fourth-place finish at the WCC Championship and an 11th place showing at the 2018 NCAA West Region Championship.

The following season, Aoibhe Richardson became an All-American for the first time in her career as she she finished 19th overall at the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country National Championship at LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind.

This past season, Riley coached Yasmine Abbes, Ed Buck and Jacob Cann to WCC All-Conference First Team recognition in cross country while Olivia Alexandre advanced to the NCAA Track and Field Championship Quarterfinal Round in the 800 meters.

Originally from Corvallis, Ore., Riley previously coached at the University of Arizona under legendary coaches Fred Harvey and Dr. James Li as he served as the assistant men's and women's cross country and track and field distance coach from August 2014 through July 2018.

A national search for the next head coach of the cross country and track and field programs has begun.
