CAREER HIGHLIGHTS AT SAN FRANCISCO:
  • In 2023-24, Riley led the Dons to a successful season in both cross country and track and field. The 2023 cross country season saw three top-10 team finishes from both the men's and women's programs, including top-five finishes in the West Coast Conference Championships. Jacob Cann earned an All-Region selection at the NCAA West Regional, finishing the 10,000 meters in 16th place out of 201 competitors. 
  • The 2024 track and field season saw multiple athletes compete in the NCAA First Round Qualifiers as Olivia Alexandre, Natalie Hlusi, Ed Buck, and Cann made an appearance. Alexandre shined in the 800 meters, advancing to the NCAA Championship Quarterfinals where she finished in 15th place.
  • After serving as the associate head coach from 2018-21, Riley officially assumed the reins of the cross country and track and field programs programs for the 2021-22 season.
  • In his first cross country season of 2018, Riley helped lead the men to a fourth-place finish at the West Coast Conference championship, and an 11th-place showing at the 2018 NCAA West Region Championship. He also guided Jack Rowe to qualify as an individual for the NCAA National Championship after finishing fifth at the West Region meet.
  • During the spring of 2019, Riley coached Rowe and Chris Olley to sub-14 5,000-meter performances, making San Francisco one of only seven programs in the nation that had multiple sub-14 5K'ers. Olley broke the program's indoor 3,000 record multiple times during the winter, and in May, both Rowe (5,000, 10,000) and Olley (5,000), as well as Hugh Nicklason (1,500), qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Meet.
OTHER CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Riley previously coached at the University of Arizona under legendary coaches Fred Harvey and Dr. James Li. Riley, served as the assistant men’s and women’s cross country and track and field distance coach from August 2014 to July 2018.  
  • While at Arizona, Riley’s success was seen in student-athletes in cross country and on the track from 800 meters to 10,000 meters. Riley help guide the distance crew to two first team All-American honors across both seasons (Collins Kibet 7th in 800, Claire Green 24th in cross country), seven second team All-American honors on the track (four outdoors, three indoors), three school records (Elvin Kibet 5,000, Green 3,000, Carlos Villarreal 1,500), two individual Pac-12 Champions on the track (C. Kibet 800, Bailey Roth steeplechase) a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track champion (E. Kibet 3,000), a USA Junior National Champion (Roth, steeplechase), a Pan American Junior Games Champion (Roth, steeplechase), 20 NCAA Preliminary Round track and field qualifiers, and two Pac-12 cross country Scholar Athletes of the Year (Sam Macaluso and Stephanie Bulder).  
  • Prior to his time at Arizona, Riley spent six years coaching the men’s and women’s cross-country teams and distance student-athletes on the track at Washington State University. While at Washington State, Riley worked with track and field legendary coach Rick Sloan and previous distance coach Pete Julian. Riley was hired by Washington State to coach the men's and women's cross country teams on Aug. 28, 2012, after serving as a volunteer assistant coach with the Cougars' program from 2008-12.
  • Prior to Washington State, Riley was an assistant coach of track and field and cross country at the College of Idaho from 2004 to '06 with McCurry. During the 2005 season, Riley helped coached the men's team to a 17th-place finish at the NAIA Cross Country National Championships.
PERSONAL HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Riley also has plenty of championship experience as an outstanding former cross country and track and field athlete at Eastern Oregon under legendary coach Ben Welch.
  • He was a two-time NAIA indoor track and field national qualifier, earning first team All-American honors in the 3,000 and a three-time NAIA outdoor track and field national qualifier, winning the 2004 10,000 NAIA National Championship. While at Eastern Oregon, Riley also went to four NAIA cross country National Championships and was a member of the first place NAIA cross country national championship academic team in 2001.
  • During his time competing at Eastern Oregon, Riley was a four-time cross country EOU MVP and selected track and field MVP once. 
OTHER NOTABLES:
  • Riley has been a United States of America Track and Field member from 2008 to present and has been a member of the Society of Neuroscience during that time period.
  • His wife, Brittany is currently a Pediatric Cardiology Fellow at Stanford University and in his spare time enjoys fly-fishing, golf, photography and backpacking.
