Four Score in Double Figures as Dons Defeat Tritons on Sunday

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Returning to the win column on Sunday, the University of San Francisco women's basketball team earned a convincing 80-69 win over UC San Diego (1-3) at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
 
San Francisco was led by Candy Edokpaigbe, who secured her third-career double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds. In addition to Edokpaigbe's performance, Noelia Mouriño registered career-highs in points and rebounds with 16 and eight, Aina Cargol accumulated 11 points, six rebounds, and six assists, and Mara Neira added 10 points, six rebounds, and two steals coming off the bench.
 
Second-chance opportunities came often for the Dons throughout the contest as the team pulled down 14 offensive rebounds that led to 15 second-chance points. Edokpaigbe posted a team-high four offensive boards, while Cargol (three), Mouriño (two), and Meghan McIntyre (two) also guided the team on the offensive glass.
 
The defensive effort from the green and gold held UC San Diego to only 37.9 percent shooting from the field, including 27.3 percent from beyond the three-point line. On the glass, the Dons recorded a season-high 50 rebounds, with six players recording five or more.
 
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • San Francisco started the scoring by going on an 8-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Mouriño, to take an early lead with 7:42 left in the first quarter.
  • Building on the first quarter lead, the Dons increased the margin to 33-25, before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 4:13 mark in the second period to increase their lead to 40-25. UC San Diego cut into its deficit near the end of the first half, but the green and gold held a comfortable 44-34 advantage heading into the break.
  • Following intermission, San Francisco continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 62-51 before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Mouriño, to expand its lead further to 67-51 with 30 seconds to go in the third.
  • The Dons kept their lead intact and grew the advantage to 80-69 with five seconds to go in the contest, following five straight free throws from Edokpaigbe.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Edokpaigbe posted an impressive 24-point, 10-rebound double-double in the win, her first as a Don and third of her career. In 38 minutes in the win over the Tritons, Edokpaigbe shot 47.4 percent (nine-for-19) from the field, connected on six of her seven free-throw attempts, and registered two steals.
  • Mouriño notched career-bests in just her fourth career game with 16 points and eight rebounds while shooting 57.1 percent (eight-for-14) from the field.
  • Cargol posted a season-high six assists, becoming the second player this season to accumulate six or more assists in a game.
  • Reaching double-digit scoring for the first time this season, Neira came off the bench for 10 points and knocked down two three-pointers.
  • As a team, San Francisco recorded 50 rebounds, the second 50-rebound game this season. Six players recorded five or more rebounds, with Mouriño leading the way with eight.
