Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Dons Race Past Demons Behind Balanced Attack

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The University of San Francisco men's basketball team (4-1) used a balanced attack to secure its third straight victory on Tuesday night as the Dons raced past Northwestern State (1-4), 84-64, at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.

The Dons had four players score in double figures, led by Mookie Cook, who had 15 points on an efficient 5-of-6 from the field. David Fuchs tacked on 13 points and two blocks, while Legend Smiley helped out with 12 points off the bench.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • After five quick points from Cook to begin the ballgame, USF went on a 7-0 run with 13:32 left in the first half to take a 16-10 lead. San Francisco then added 13 points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 50-31 advantage. The Dons relied on their three-point shooting in the period, knocking down seven shots to account for 21 of their 50 points.
  • San Francisco kept its lead intact before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Smiley's three, to grow the lead to 61-34 with 15:50 to go in the contest. The Demons narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Dons still cruised the rest of the way for the 84-64 win. USF shot well from three-point range in the second half, hitting five shots from deep to score 15 of its 34 points.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • The Dons held the Demons to only 39.2 percent shooting (20-51 FG) from the field.
  • San Francisco shot well from three-point range overall, knocking down 12 of 28 attempts from distance.
  • USF's bench came alive by adding 43 points, led by Fuchs with 13. San Francisco also shared the ball well, recording an assist on 84 percent of made baskets.
  • The Dons had a 33-27 edge on the boards in the win, including five rebounds each from Fuchs and Guillermo Diaz Graham.
  • USF was active on the defensive end, recording five blocks as a team.
