SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Head coach Chris Gerlufsen and the University of San Francisco men's basketball program announced today the signing of guard Weilun Zhao (Varese, Italy).
"The University of San Francisco is very excited to welcome Weilun Zhao to our men's basketball program," said Gerlufsen. "Wei is an immensely talented player that has developed through high-level experience with Pallancanestro Varese in Italy, Overtime Elite in the United States, and the Chinese Men's National Team. He has a high IQ for the game and a knack for making others better, in addition to being able to really shoot the basketball. We are confident that Wei will develop into a bright piece of our future here at USF!"
Zhao comes to the Hilltop after competing for the Cold Hearts in the Overtime Elite league, a developmental basketball league for 16-20-year-olds, based in Atlanta, Ga. Last season, the guard averaged 13.9 points, 6.6 assists, 2.1 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 0.4 blocks per game on 47.8 percent shooting overall and 42.5 percent from beyond-the-arc.
Prior to his time with the Cold Hearts, Zhao also played for Pallancanestro Varese, who compete in the Italian first division LBA. Additionally, he also suited up for the U-19 Chinese National Team.
