Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Dons Upend Toreros for First Conference Home Win

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The University of San Francisco (USF) men's basketball team (10-6, 2-1 WCC) stepped on the gas in the second half on Friday night as the Dons upended San Diego (6-9, 1-2 WCC), 74-64, at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.

The Dons had four players score in double figures, led by Tyrone Riley IV, who had 22 points. Legend Smiley added 15 points off the bench, Ryan Beasley helped out with 13 points, six assists, and two steals, and Junjie Wang logged his first double-double of the season with 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • After falling behind 6-3, San Francisco went on a 6-0 run with 14:42 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Smiley, to take a 9-6 lead. The Dons then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 29-28 advantage. San Francisco relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 29 points.
  • Following intermission, San Francisco kept widening that lead, expanding it to 42-39 before going on an 11-0 run, finished off by Wang's layup, to grow the lead to 53-39 with 9:48 to go in the contest. The Toreros narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Dons still cruised the rest of the way for the 74-64 win. San Francisco took care of business in the paint, recording 28 of its 45 points in the lane.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Wang was tabbed Player of the Game after finishing with 12 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 block on 4-of-8 shooting in 27 minutes. The junior forward also shot 4-of-6 from the free throw line.
  • San Francisco never trailed in the second half on its way to victory. The Dons bench came alive by adding 36 points to its scoring output.
  • USF did a great job limiting San Diego from distance, holding San Diego to 18.2 percent (4-22) from beyond-the-arc for the night.
  • San Francisco had a 42-25 edge on the boards in the win. USF cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 12 offensive boards in the game.
