SAN BRUNO, Calif. – For the second time this season,
Aina Cargol has been named West Coast Conference Co-Freshman of the Week, shared with Gonzaga's Lauren Whittaker, announced by the league on Monday morning.
Cargol paced San Francisco in three wins last week, averaging 12.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per game in wins over Portland, San Diego, and LMU.
Recording back-to-back double-digit games, Cargol finished the week with a 17-point, eight-assist performance in an 85-82 overtime victory at LMU on Sunday, Jan. 4. Scoring 13 of her 17 points in the second half and overtime, Cargol connected on the game-tying three with 14 seconds left to send the contest into an extra period. In the overtime period, she knocked down six of her eight free-throw attempts to help seal the victory.
In the road win at San Diego on Friday, Jan. 2, Cargol totaled 12 points, shooting 50 percent (four-for-eight) from the field, and added a team-high six assists in 35 minutes.
Throughout the three contests, she led the team in assists, totaling 20, highlighted by eight in the win over the Lions. In 15 games, she leads San Francisco in total assists (66), assists per game (4.4), and ranks first among all freshmen in the WCC in both categories.
For San Francisco, this weekly award marks the fourth for the team this season, and the second freshman weekly honor for Cargol.
