DONS AT A GLANCE:
- In their final matchup as conference foes, USF was unable to snap a 13-year skid against Gonzaga as the Bulldogs took an 80-59 win over the Dons at Chase Center on Wednesday night.
- Making his return after a two-game absence due to injury, Tyrone Riley IV led the green and gold with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field. Off the bench, Mookie Cook had his highest scoring game of WCC action with 12 points, tying a career-high with seven made free throws.
- Vukasin Masic and Guillermo Diaz Graham will be honored in Saturday's senior night festivities. Both Dons are in their first season at San Francisco, transferring from Portland and Pittsburgh, respectively. In his first game as a Don, Masic surpassed the 1,000 career point milestone, as he is averaging 5.8 points and 2.2 assists this season. Diaz Graham has been one of the green and gold's best long-distance shooters this season, shooting 37.3 percent from beyond the arc. Notably, both Masic and Diaz Graham have played in every game for USF this season, with only Legend Smiley and Junjie Wang holding the same distinction.
- With a 4-4 record at home in conference play heading into Sunday night, the Dons will look to keep an eight-season streak alive of having a winning home record in WCC play (excluding the 2020-21 COVID-impacted season). The 2015-16 Dons posted a 4-5 home record in league action (8-10 WCC).
SCOUTING THE BRONCOS:
- After a week away from the hardwood, Santa Clara looks to get back in the win column on the Hilltop, having suffered its first home loss of the season last Saturday night against then-No. 11/12 Gonzaga, 94-86. In a game with nine ties and nine lead changes, the Broncos were in it throughout the contest, holding a 60-59 lead with just over 10 minutes to play in the game. The Bulldogs then dug deep, doing just enough to secure a victory and snap SCU's nine-game win streak.
- Leading the Broncos offensively all season, Christian Hammond led Santa Clara in scoring last Saturday night with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting, with Elijah Mahi right behind him with a 15-point night. Hammond currently ranks eighth in the WCC in scoring within conference play at 15.6 points per game, having scored in double figures in eight of the last nine contests.
- The Broncos as a team have been an offensive machine in WCC action, leading the league with 87.7 points per game, the fourth-highest scoring average in conference play across Division I this season. Additionally, SCU is shooting 49.9 percent from the field as a unit, good for second in WCC and 12th in Division I.
- Excelling defensively as well, Santa Clara also leads the league in both steals per game (10.13, third in Division I within conference play) and turnovers forced per game (15.1) in conference action, with five-time WCC Freshman of the Week Allen Graves leading the way with 2.3 steals per game (second in WCC).
- Eyeing its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 30 years, Santa Clara comes into Saturday ranked in the top 40 in the NET Rankings (40), KenPom (39), and Bart Torvik (34), and was recently tabbed by ESPN's Joe Lunardi as one of the 'Last Four In' in his Feb. 20 bracket prediction.
SERIES HISTORY:
- Saturday night's regular season home finale will mark the 239th all-time meeting between San Francisco and Santa Clara, with SCU holding a narrow 121-117 lead in the all-time series. In their first meeting this season on Jan. 28, a 54-point second half from the Broncos proved too much for the Dons to overcome as Santa Clara drew first blood in the season series in an 88-73 win at Leavey Center. Across the last three seasons, the home team has emerged victorious in each of the last five meetings between USF and SCU, as the green and gold seek a third consecutive season series split.
