Broncos Defeat Dons on Saturday Night

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The University of San Francisco (USF) men's basketball team (15-15, 7-10 WCC) showed fight in its final home game of the season, but Santa Clara (23-6, 14-2 WCC) ultimately outlasted the Dons, 94-73, on Saturday night at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.

The Dons had three players score in double figures, led by Ryan Beasley, who had 22 points and five assists. Junjie Wang added 19 points, and Tyrone Riley IV helped out with 13 points.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • The two teams traded baskets out of the gates, with San Francisco taking an early four-point lead after a three-pointer from Beasley at 14:54. The Dons kept pace until near the midway mark of the period, but Santa Clara responded with a 10-0 run to go up by 13, 37-24, with 8:52 remaining in the half. USF then fell behind 42-28, but the green and gold went on a 7-0 run with 3:09 left in the first half to narrow its deficit to 42-35. San Francisco continued to close the gap at the end of the period, cutting the Santa Clara lead to 44-38 at the halftime break thanks to a half-court buzzer beater from Beasley.
  • Santa Clara kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 73-51 advantage before San Francisco went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Wang's three, to shrink the deficit to 73-59 with 7:42 to go in the contest. The Broncos responded once more, outscoring the Dons the rest of the way to secure a 94-73 victory.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • The Dons shot well from three-point range, knocking down 12 of 29 long-range attempts, good for 41.4 percent.
  • The Dons were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, tallying five blocks as a team.
  • Smiley was also efficient in disrupting SCU's passing lanes, collecting three steals against the Broncos.
  • San Francisco got a team-high six rebounds from Mookie Cook.

San Francisco will head east to the Central Valley for its final game of the regular season as the Dons are set to travel to Pacific next Saturday, Feb. 28. Tipoff from Alex G.
