Women's Basketball Erases Double-Digit Deficit, Downs Saint Mary's in Overtime

MORAGA, Calif. – Led by a second-half surge, the University of San Francisco women's basketball team (16-11, 9-7) earned a come-from-behind 61-60 overtime victory at Saint Mary's (15-14, 6-10) Saturday evening at the University Credit Union Pavilion.
 
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • San Francisco struggled out of the gate, falling behind 16-6 at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Dons continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 32-18 halftime deficit.
  • Cutting into the deficit entering the third quarter, the green and gold scored six straight points, capped off with a Mara Neira fastbreak layup to get within eight, 32-24, at 8:56.
  • After Saint Mary's brought its lead back to 15 at the 4:16 mark of the third quarter, San Francisco used a 10-4 scoring run to bring the game back to single digits, 46-37, at the end of the period.
  • The Dons continued to battle in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 50 with 5:23 remaining after Candy Edokpaigbe recorded a layup.
  • Edokpaigbe gave the green and gold its first lead of the game shortly after, scoring another transition layup for a 54-53 advantage.  
  • Leading by three, 56-53, following two clutch free throws from Noelia Mouriño with 32 seconds left, Saint Mary's Abigail Shoff knocked down a game-tying three-pointer to force an overtime period.
  • In overtime, San Francisco outscored Saint Mary's 5-4 to earn the win, with Aina Cargol connecting on a go-ahead straight-away three-pointer to put the Dons up 61-60 with 15 seconds on the clock. 
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Matching her career-high and in field goals made, Edokpaigbe scored a game-high 28 points on 64.7 percent (11-of-17) shooting. Along with her scoring, she added seven rebounds and two assists.
  • Neira impressed on the defensive as she recorded the third-most steals in a game all-time in program history with eight. She also registered 11 points, reaching double figures for the fourth time in the last five games, and secured a season-best eight rebounds.
  • Despite only scoring nine points, Cargol knocked down her second game-winning or go-ahead three-pointer of the season.
  • Mouriño posted a near-double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds, all coming during the second half and overtime.
  • As a team, San Francisco outpaced Saint Mary's in points in the paint (22-12), points off turnovers (15-4), and fastbreak points (14-0).
