Dons fall to Pepperdine after taking the opening set

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The San Francisco volleyball team took the opening set before falling to Pepperdine in four sets, 3-1 (25-20, 19-25, 25-27, 22-25), Saturday afternoon at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
With the loss, San Francisco moves to 8-7 overall and 0-2 in West Coast Conference play.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

San Francisco opened the match strong, scoring the first point and never trailing on its way to a 25-20 first-set victory.

The Dons hit .419 in the opening frame, recording 15 kills with just two attack errors while also adding three service aces.

Pepperdine responded in the second set, taking an early lead and holding off San Francisco for a 25-19 win to even the match at one set apiece.

In the third, the Dons battled back from a seven-point deficit at 11-4, eventually tying the set late and earning a set-point opportunity before the Waves pulled out a 27-25 victory.

The fourth set featured nine ties, but Pepperdine took the lead for good at 14-13 and held on for a 25-22 win to close out the match.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Katariina Korhonen led the San Francisco attack with a match-high 15 kills while hitting .393.

Petra Fritz added 11 kills and finished with 12.5 points.

Jordan Smart filled the stat sheet with a team-high 25 assists, 17 digs and two service aces.

Emma Neukirchen recorded nine kills and four block assists.

San Francisco finished the match with 51 kills, 48 assists, 53 digs and seven total blocks.

San Francisco returns to the road to continue West Coast Conference play, traveling to Seattle U on Thursday, Oct. 1. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Redhawk Center in Seattle, Wash.

San Francisco returns to the Hilltop to compete in the USF Challenge; the team's final stretch of nonconference matches. The Dons are set to host Texas Southern on Thursday, Sept. 17, Northern Arizona on Friday, Sept. 18, and California Baptist on Saturday, Sept. 19, at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
