The 2012 University of San Francisco Baseball Fall World Series is underway! Games One and Two are in the books, with the USF Dons Gold team holding a 2-0 advantage. Game One was a battle of the bullpens, with the Gold edging the Green 1-0. Gold starter Sheldon Lee threw 3.0 innings of scoreless baseball while allowing just one hit and striking out two. Lee set the tone for the rest of the Gold pitching staff, who continued to put up zeros for the final 6.0 innings.
Green starter Abe Bobb held the Gold team scoreless in his 3.0 innings of work as well. Bobb allowed three hits while striking out four and walking none. Gold scored the only run of the game in the seventh after redshirt-senior Bob Mott got things started with a two out single to left. After advancing to second, he came around to score on a sharp single to right-center by freshman catcher Steven Camberos.
Josh Ehrlich led the offense for the Green team notching two hits on the day, a single in the sixth and a double in the third. Junior RHP Alex Balog threw 3.0 innings of relief for the Gold, allowing just one hit while striking out three. Lefty setup man Ben Graff pitched around an error in the eighth to get the ball to fellow southpaw Mott, who came on in the ninth.
Green threatened with a lead off hit in the top of the ninth off the bat of senior center fielder Justin Maffei, but freshman first baseman/outfielder Peter Dempsey made a spectacular play in left to gun him out trying to extend it into an extra-base hit (USFAthletics).
PREP CAREER: Played four years of baseball … named MVP as a freshman … three-year varsity starter … two-time varsity team defensive player of the year … All-Marmonte League Honorable Mention as a senior … selected to compete in the Valley Invitational and Jim Parker Ventura County All-Star game.
