Standout player at USF from 1959-1962 and later served as Head Coach of the Dons from 1971-1978…member of USF’s Athletic Hall of Fame and a Legend of the Hilltop…one of the best guards in USF history…earned Second Team All-WCAC honors as a sophomore and was a First Team All-Conference pick as a junior and senior…led the Dons in scoring in 1961 and 1962…broke Bill Russell’s single-game scoring record with 41 points against West Texas State on Dec. 5, 1961, a record which stood until Bill Cartwright poured in 43 against Florida State on Dec. 18, 1976…also holds USF’s record for most free throws made without a miss, going 17-for-17 from the line against Hawaii on Dec. 23, 1961…returned to USF as an Assistant Coach in 1968 and took over the head coaching duties four games into the 1970-1971 season…led USF to five WCAC titles and five NCAA Tournament teams…landed the most heralded recruiting class in USF history in 1975 which included Bill Cartwright, Winford Boynes and James Hardy…under Gaillard’s direction, the Dons won their first 29 games of the 1976-1977 season and rose to No. 1 in the nation…was named the National coach of the Year, District VIII Coach of the Year and was a two-time WCAC Coach of the Year…also served as USF’s Athletic Director…after leaving USF, resumed his coaching career at Lewis & Clark College from 1989-2011…native of Richmond, CA who attended Harry Ellie High School.
