War Memorial at The Sobrato Center

Hosting San Francisco’s only Division I level sports teams, War Memorial Gym at the Sobrato Center is home to USF men’s and women’s basketball teams as well as their women’s volleyball team. The gym also houses the Athletic Department offices and athletic training rooms for the university's 15 sports programs and newly opened Athletics Hall of Fame.

War Memorial Gym is dedicated to the USF alumni who lost their lives during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. It is located on Golden Gate Avenue on campus and seats 5,300 people inside. Originally built in 1958, War Memorial Gym currently holds the title for the oldest basketball venue still being played at in the West Coast Conference.

The court was briefly home to the San Francisco Warriors during their 1966-1967 season. The USF men’s basketball teams in the 1970’s worked to build legacies in the gym led by players Bill Cartwright and Phil Smith who took the team to multiple NCAA tournaments. In 1982, War Memorial Gym became the site of CBS's first national college basketball broadcast, covering a game between USF and the University of Georgia. It has also hosted the men’s West Coast Conference basketball tournaments in 1987, 1989, and 1993.

The 2021-22 men’s basketball team finished with a record of 13-4 playing at home, leading them to their return to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1998. The women’s basketball team has made it to the tournament a total of four times since the opening of the gym, most recently in 2016 with a home record of 9-5. Decorating the gym are banners highlighting the sports teams accomplishments over the years as well as a total of ten retired jerseys of basketball legends both men and women whose careers started at USF.
