SAN FRANCISCO — The 11th Annual Tom Caruso 5k
run will take place this Sunday, Oct. 24 at 8:30 a.m. at Golden
Gate Park in front of the conservatory of flowers.
Registration for the event is still open with the cost to
register set at $30. Race day registration begins at 7:45 a.m.,
while participants can also click here to register online. Families can also
sign up for the 5k walk/run that begins at 8:35 a.m.
The 5k race route starts at the conservatory of flowers, goes
down John F Kennedy Drive, cuts over on Stowe Lake Drive and does a
loop around Stowe Lake before joining back up with John F Kennedy
Drive to head back to the finish line at the conservatory of
flowers.
Tom Caruso was struck and killed by an automobile on Feb. 8,
2000 while training for the 2000 Olympic Marathon Trials. This
annual run bearing his namesake commemorates Caruso's passion for
the sport. Caruso was a fixture of the Bay Area running community,
having attended St. Ignatius Prep, Saint Mary's College and the
University of San Francisco.
Proceeds from the event go benefit the Tom Caruso Memorial
Scholarship for the USF School of Business Management and the USF
cross country program.
Participants receive a t-shirt, a raffle drawing entry and
refreshments. Some of the raffle items include: San Francisco
Giants tickets, Divisadero Touchless Car Wash tickets, gift
certificates to the University of San Francisco book store, wine
from Silverado Winery, USF men's and women's basketball tickets and
Transports Running Center bags.
The top five men's race finishers and top five women's race
finishers will receive prizes that include free membership to Koret
Recreation, treatment sessions from Avanzare Chiropractic, gift
certificates to Sports Basement and Fior D'Italia along with wine
from Silverado Winery.
Last year's event drew nearly 150 runners, with the USF
volleyball and baseball teams set to run in the race this year.
"It's a great event to be involved in and one of the highlights
is seeing the USF athletes competing outside their own sports," USF
Associate cross country coach Tom Kloos said.
Divisadero Touchless Car Wash is a presenting sponsor for the
race along with Odwalla and Coca-Cola. Event sponsors are Sports
Basement, Avanzare Chiropractic, Koret Recreation, San Francisco
Giants and Silverado Winery.
