(San Francisco) - The University of San Francisco women's basketball team dropped a 71-38 decision Sunday to visiting UC Santa Barbara at War Memorial Gym. Vania Singleterry led the Dons with eight points off the bench. Santa Barbara was paced by a trio of Gauchos that scored in double-digits.
Both teams got out to a slow start as the game remained scoreless until 17:45, when UC Santa Barbara (2-5) went up 2-0. The Dons' (2-5) would remain scoreless until over five minutes into the half, scoring their first point at 14:54. USF was held to seven points in the opening 12 minutes, with five of the points coming at the free throw line.
The Gauchos went up by as many as 19 in the half, taking their largest lead, 41-22, into the locker room at halftime.
San Francisco's scoring woes continued in the second half, tallying just six points in the first 10 minutes. For the half, the Dons posted a 13.8 shooting percentage, connecting on just four baskets from the field.
For the game, San Francisco shot at a 20.8 clip and just 10.5 percent from beyond the arc. Santa Barbara hit 26-of-63 for a 42.9 percentage.
Singleterry paced the team with a season-high eight points in just nine minutes on the floor. Bailey Barbour and Ashley Boggs added five points each.
Barbour paced the Dons' defensive efforts with nine rebounds. Whitney Daniels added eight boards for San Francisco.
Santa Barbara was led by Emilie Johnson with 18 points. Mekia Valentine recorded a double-double thanks to 15 points and 14 rebounds, while also added four blocks.
San Francisco will take to the road, again, as it travels to Logan, Utah Wednesday. USF will face off against Utah State Wednesday at 6 p.m., PST.
