MIAMI, Fla. — The San Francisco volleyball team claimed
its first victory of the season against Bethune-Cookman in its
final match of the Miami Invitational on Saturday night.
The Dons swept the Wildcats in straight sets 25-14, 25-19 and
25-17.
"I'm really proud of the girls that after playing a tough match
against Miami and dropping a close one to FIU, they weren't
discouraged and came out strong against Bethune-Cookman," USF Head
coach Gilad Doron said. "We hope this is the beginning of some good
things and more wins."
Doron is just one win away from his 100th victory as
a head coach.
Sophomore middle blocker Hadley Simmons
was named to the All-Tournament team after totaling 24 kills and
3.5 blocks.
USF (1-8) rattled off a 13-3 run to come away with the first set
and fought back from a 5-1 deficit to win the second set. Freshman
hitter Malina Terrell
keyed a 14-4 run to close out the third set, during which the Dons
claimed eight points via kills.
Terrell finished with nine kills, while Joan Caloiaro was
one kill and one dig shy of a triple double with 22 assists, nine
kills and nine digs and three blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Alycia Cox fell
just two kill short of her second double-double of the day after
totaling 14 digs and eight kills. Senior Alaina Sully
finished with nine digs, nine assists and three aces.
Earlier in the day, FIU (4-5) edged USF in four sets by way of
26-24, 25-16, 21-25, 25-21 scores in the first-ever match-up
between the two programs.
The first set proved to be a thriller with neither team leading
by more than three points at any given time, but the Panthers took
advantage of late hitting errors by the Dons to begin the match
with the upper hand. FIU went on an 11-3 run to close out a
second-set win.
USF came roaring back in third set, leading by as many as five
points multiple times en route to extending the match for one more
set. The final set was knotted at 19, but FIU rattled off four
unanswered points to create the separation it needed to win the set
and the match. Both teams hit .500 in final set.
Simmons led the
Dons' offensive attack with a career-high 14 kills and a .375
hitting percentage. Terrell also finished with a career-high of 13
kills. Caloiaro turned in a double-double with 29 assists, 15 digs
and nine kills with Cox adding a double-double of her own with 11
kills and 11 digs. Freshman libero Whitney Swain had
21 digs and three aces.
"Hadley really stepped up and Caiti [Wenger] and Malina picked
it up for us at different times as well," Doron said.
USF returns to action next weekend as it hosts two top-10 ranked
teams in Bay Area rivals Cal and Stanford. The Bears travel to the
Hilltop for a 7 p.m. game on Friday, Sept. 17 with the Cardinal
coming into town at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18.
