THIS WEEK: USF faces a tough challenge this
weekend, traveling to No. 16 California on Friday before hosting UC
Irvine Sunday at Negoesco Stadium. UC Irvine is currently receiving
votes in the national polls. The Dons and Bears will challenge each
other Friday at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley. Kick-off is scheduled
for 1 p.m. Sunday, the Anteaters and the Green and Gold will face
down at 1 p.m. on the Hilltop.
NEXT WEEK: San Francisco will split next
weekend on the road and at home. Friday, the Dons will travel to
Davis to face UC Davis at 5 p.m. before hosting Washington Sunday,
Sept. 26 at 1 p.m.
LAST WEEK: San Francisco earned its first shutout
of the season, while also suffering its first shutout during a
two-game stint at Neogeosco Stadium. Friday, USF's
Ashlyn Mazur
scored off of a corner from
Rita Hurlbut at 61:32, propelling the Dons to a 1-0 victory over UC
Riverside. Sunday, San Francisco looked to continue its undefeated
record at home, but Nevada had a different idea. Late in the match,
the Wolfpacks' Danielle Green fired a free kick from about 35 yards
out straight into the upper V of the goal, giving Nevada the 1-0
victory.
DONS OPEN HOME SLATE 4-0: Through the
first four home matches of the season, USF was 4-0-0 when play on
the Hilltop. The last time the Dons went 4-0 to open the home slate
was in 1997. This season, San Francisco has outscored opponents 9-5
when playing at Negoesco.
USF v. NATIONALLY RANKED OPPONENTS: Since 2000,
San Francisco has posted a 2-21 record against nationally ranked
foes. When playing the ranked opponents on the road, USF is 0-10.
The last time the Dons defeated a top-25 opponent was in 2006, when
USF took a 2-1 victory from then-No. 17 Cal State Fullerton.
NORWEGIAN DUO EARNS NATIONAL ATTENTION: Christina Moberg and
Hanna Haanes, both freshmen on the USF women's soccer team, have been
named to the Top Drawer National 100 Division I College Freshmen.
Moberg and Haanes, both natives of Norway, are two of eight
freshmen from the West Coast Conference to appear on this week's
list. Moberg is ranked 89th this week, while Haanes is listed at
91st. San Francisco is just one of two West Coast Conference
schools to land two or more freshman in this week's ranks. Portland
leads the pack with three honors, including the highest ranked WCC
representative, Erin Dees. The Pilots' goalkeeper checks in at No.
9. Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara, Pepperdine and Saint Mary's all
have one student-athlete ranked.
GOALS A PLENTY: The four goals against Santa
Barbara (Aug. 29) marked the first time since a 4-0 victory over
Cal State Northridge in 2006 that the Dons have scored four or more
tallies against a Division I opponent. USF scored 11 goals through
the opening five matches of the season. The last time USF scored 11
or more goals in the opening five matches of the season was in
2003. During the 2003 campaign, the Dons scored 17 goals in the
first five matches, mainly thanks to an 8-0 victory over San Jose
State.
LANDMARK TO START THE SEASON: The season
opening win against San Jose State marked the 175th victory in USF
women's soccer history. In 25 years on the Hilltop, The Dons have
amassed a 177-268-33 record. Under the guidance of current head
coach Mark Carr, San Francisco is 18-36-10.
ASHLEY O'BRIEN EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION: Ashley
O'Brien was named a national Primetime Performer of the Week,
as announced by CollegeSoccer360.com, for the week of Sept. 1.
O'Brien played an integral role in the Dons' wins over North
Florida and UC Santa Barbara, scoring two goals and an assist. With
nine seconds remaining in the opening half against North Florida,
the senior defender scored an unassisted goal off of a free kick.
Sunday, Aug. 29, in a big 4-1 victory over defending Big West
Champion UC Santa Barbara, O'Brien capped scoring with a goal late
in the match. After being passed the ball from Molly Hall, The
senior fired a shot from 10 yards out into the left side of the
net. O'Brien also registered her assist against the Gauchos,
assisting on Hanna Haanes' game-winning goal in the first half.
UNBLEMISHED TO START THE SEASON: San
Francisco's 3-0-0 unblemished record to open the season marked the
first time since 1996 that the Dons had gone undefeated against a
trio of Division I foes to open the season. Last year, USF opened
with a 3-0-0 mark, facing one Division I opponent.
OFFENSE ON STRONG PACE: San Francisco's offense
has stepped up its game this fall, already scoring over half of the
goals scored last year for the Dons. In 2009, USF recorded 23 goals
on the season. To date, San Francisco has posted 12 in seven
matches. Individually, the Dons are posting better numbers as well.
For the past two seasons, the Dons' assist leader for the season
had recorded two assists. Three members of the Green and Gold
accomplished the feat in 2008, while six did last season. This
season, Molly Hall paces the pack with three assists. In addition,
Hanna Haanes has tied the top-goal scorers total for the past two
years with four netted. The last time a Don scored more than four
goals in a season was in 2006 when Fiona O'Sullivan tallied
five.
DONS IMPROVE GREATLY IN 2009: According to
Sopis Sports – a sports information company that covers
collegiate sports, the USF women's soccer program was one of the
most improved Division I women's soccer programs in 2009. USF
finished 23rd in the ranking, with a 1.08 improvement rating. San
Francisco posted a 5-13-2 record in 2008, before improving to 7-7-5
in 2009.
TWO NORWEGIANS ARRIVE ON THE HILLTOP: Christina Moberg and Hanna Haanes, both natives of Norway, are in the first
season of their collegiate careers at USF. Hannes comes to San
Francisco with a plethora of international experience under her
belt. The freshman has competed for the U16, U17, U19, U20 and U23
Norwegian National Teams. She was named Player of the Match in two
European Championship contests. Moberg joins to USF after leading
First Division Asker FK to a 2007 Norwegian Cup Championship. While
playing for Asker, Moberg tallied an impressive 30 goals. To date,
the duo has recorded seven goals and two assists for USF, while
taking 19 shots, 14 on goal. Two of the Dons' four game-winning
goals have come thanks to the efforts of the Norwegians.
NEGOESCO UNVEILS NEW LOOK: Negoesco Stadium is
sporting a new look this season. Over the summer, new ProTurf
Solutions was installed at the Dons' home facility.
25th ANNIVERSARY OF WOMEN'S SOCCER: The 2010
season marks the 25th Anniversary of women's soccer on the Hilltop.
In 1985, Erik Visser became the first head coach of the program,
recruiting essentially a team of walk-ons. Since the programs
founding, Visser has moved on to become the head coach of the men's
program and the women's soccer program has amassed a 178-269-33
all-time record.
2010 VIRTUAL MEDIA GUIDE AND ALMANAC: The 2010
University of San Francisco women's soccer media guides and almanac
are now available online. The 2010 Virtual Media Guide is an
interactive look into the 2010 Dons, the coaching staff, support
staff and University, while the 2010 Almanac delves deeper in the
history and tradition of USF women's soccer. Both the media guide
and almanac are available, and viewing, in the information center
on the right hand side of the women's soccer page on
www.usfdons.com.
DONS EARN FIRST REGIONAL RANK IN SIX YEARS:
After a convincing 4-1 victory over defending Big West Champion UC
Santa Barbara Aug. 29, the USF women's soccer team earned a spot
West Region top-10, as announced by the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA). The Dons were ranked seventh in the
West. The regional rank marked the first time since 2004 that USF
has earned the recognition.
