SAN FRANCISCO — University of San Francisco head baseball coach Nino Giarratano released "The Contract" on Thursday to give fans, future players and their families a glimpse of USF's new recruiting philosophy.
"This is an important day for USF Baseball and future Dons," Giarratano said. "The Contract is a commitment to find the right people for this program, no matter how long it takes."
One major emphasis in the contract is that USF will recruit its players later than most, waiting for development of players and relationships.
"We are one program improving the way we recruit," Giarratano said. "If it's a small contribution to a healthier process, that's good too. This is really about our team, our players and future Dons. The Contract is a way to discipline ourselves to have scholarship money when the young man from 50 miles away makes a development jump."

IT'S TIME
"It's time to make four (4) promises to recruits, families and coaches. Below you will find a very different road map in recruiting. It's a way for us to find special people and players who want to be Dons. For the next four (4) years USF Baseball will adhere to The Contract: Four (4) Pillars of Recruiting."
1. Timing - Make all scholarship offers after July 1st.
"Late is Great. We will wait for you to arrive in your final year of (i) high school or (ii) junior college. You (The Player) will have time to develop, build relationships with coaches, and learn more about the college experience. We (The Program) may miss a great one early ... let's find a hungry group of players late."
2. LATE IS GREAT - Spend Thirty (30) percent of the year's scholarship budget after January 1st.
"Calling all Late Bloomers. Great workers take time to emerge. The Dons have had program-changing success due to players who committed after the New Year. (a) All-American Tagg Bozied (2nd Round MLB Draft selection), Jesse Foppert (2nd Round), Jermaine Clark (5th Round) are a few. Our New Year's resolution each year will be to be able to sign difference makers. Who will be next?"
3. THE FIT - Before a scholarship is offered, contact your high school and a travel ball coach.
"It takes a baseball community. Your coaches are often a resource for you and for college coaches. Work with the men and mentors close to you to find the right school, coaching staff and program. The question we ask: 'Is he a champion on and off the field?'"
4. "A DON" - Reinvest $30,000 per year in our current roster.
"Invest in those who are vested in the program. Each year we will reward people who make a difference and make us different. Make it an incentive to be a better Don. Consider it a 'thank you' from the program for embodying courage, class and competitiveness on and off the field."
4 Promises. 4 Years.
Late is Great
