(La Quinta, CA) – San Francisco men's golf posted a strong finish against an elite field, posting a fifth place showing at The Prestige Tuesday afternoon shooting a two-under 286. The Dons made up six shots on the field to post a top-five finish while competing on the par-72 Greg Norman Course playing at 7,156 yards.
"We got off to a really good start for a change, which was refreshing," USF head coach Rich Yokota said. "We didn't have everybody going on all cylinders at all, but we had enough guys hang on and clutch up at certain points during the week to save ourselves. This was a big week for us."
Senior Ji Hwan Park turned in a strong final round and was the top Don on the leader board. Park shot a four-under 68 Tuesday to secure ninth place at eight-under 208 (68, 72, 68). A three-time medalist, Park turned in a bogey-free round and carded four birdies in the first five holes on the back nine.
Junior Taylor Travis finished in a share of 10th place at seven-under 209 (69, 70, 70). The 2011 West Coast Conference Championship medalist recorded four birdies on the final 18 holes. Washington's Cheng-Tsung Pan won the event with a seven-under 65 on the final day, finishing at 15-under for the tournament at 201 (69, 67, 65).
Freshman Jobim Carlos turned in a strong Green and Gold debut, finishing at even-par 216 (72, 73, 71).
Park ranked second in the field in birdies with 16 and third in par-four scoring (-6). Carlos shared the overall tournament lead in pars with 44, Travis was third in pars with 43, while junior Dash Lindsell was tied for eighth with 38.
No. 2 Oregon won the event, leading wire-to-wire with a sizzling 32-under 832 (279, 273, 280), two shots in front of runner-up Washington at 834 (280, 277, 277). No. 1 Stanford was third at 24-under 840 (280, 282, 278), three shots ahead of No. 28 San Diego State at 21-under 843 (284, 274, 285). San Francisco (282, 288, 286) and Duke (289, 285, 282) finished tied for fifth overall at eight-under 856.
San Francisco posted impressive wins against No. 6 Central Florida (859) and three Pac-12 schools – Arizona State (858), Southern California (861) and Oregon State (864). The defending West Coast Conference Champions also topped league rivals San Diego (870) and Pepperdine (878). The tournament field featured four top-25 teams and three in the top-10.
San Francisco returns to action when it competes in the 2011 Alister MacKenzie Invitational, hosted by Cal. Tournament play begins Monday, October 17 at the Meadow Club.
