Winston Posts 18 As Dons Falter At Seattle

Box Score (Seattle, Wash.) - Taj Winston, of the University of San Francisco women's basketball team, scored 18 points Friday as the Dons dropped a 74-56 decision to Seattle at the Connolly Center in the Emerald City. Winston paced a trio of Dons (1-5) to scored 10-plus points in the game.

Seattle jumped out from the get-go, taking an early lead and never surrendering it. The Redhawks went up by as many as 19 in the first half thanks, mostly, to an attack from deep. In the opening 10 minutes of the first stanza, Seattle tallied four baskets from beyond the arc.

San Francisco rallied back late in the half, putting Seattle on ice from the field. The Dons held the Redhawks scoreless over the final 3:50 of the first half. During the span, USF lessned a 15 point deficit, going into the halftime down by nine, 37-28.

Rheina Ale led the Dons in the first half with a dozen points. As a team, USF struggled from beyond the arc in the opening half, hitting just of one of 14 baskets.

The second half poised no difference for San Francisco, who fell behind by as many as 28. Behind five freshman on the floor, the Dons rallied late, knocking the deficit to under 20.

In addition to Winston's 18 points, the freshman posted seven rebounds with two blocks and a steal. Joining the freshman guard with 10-plus points was senior Rheina Ale and freshman Aundrea Gordon. Both Ale and Gordon posted a dozen points.

Newcomer Alicia Scafidi led the defensive efforts with eight rebounds in just 12 minutes on the floor.

Elle Kerfoot who, thanks to four three's, tallied 19 points led Seattle.

With the loss, the Dons fall into the consolation game of the Seattle U Thanksgiving Tournament. San Francisco will face Loyola Chicago Saturday evening at 6 p.m. Seattle advanced to the Championship game. It will take on Akron in the second game at 8 p.m.
