DAVIS, Calif. — USF runners Ashley O'Brien and Colin Hopkins gave the Dons a clean sweep in the 800 meter races at the Woody Wilson Classic on Saturday at UC Davis.
O'Brien took a sizeable lead after the first 400 meters and ran solo for the second half of the race to set a personal record in 2:11.45. It was the second consecutive first-place finish in the event for the senior after having won her race last weekend at the Jackie Joyner-Kersee/Rafer Johnson Invitational at UCLA.
Hopkins ran in a tightly packed race with a very slow opening 400, with the senior taking control in the final 150 meters of the race to win in 1:54.31.
"Both Ashley and Colin ran solid races today and both demonstrated that they are ready to run much faster in the right race," USF coach Helen Lehman-Winters said. "They both just need to continue to focus on competing and the faster times with come."
Chloe Trevelen ran a personal best 4:45.22 in the 1,500 to finish third and three USF runners set new career marks in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Freshman Adam Smith shaved 18 seconds off his personal best, running the second fastest steeplechase of the season for the Dons in 9:32.20. Jason Waldram and Paul Achee finished in 9:46.70 and 9:48.90, respectively.
USF continues its season on Friday and Saturday, April 22-23 at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational hosted by Cal in Berkeley, Calif.
