Defending West Coast Conference Champions Send Veteran Team into Battle

THIS WEEK FOR THE DONS: The San Francisco men's golf team begins the 2011-12 season on Monday, September 19 at the 2011 Saint Mary's Invitational in Seaside, Calif. The defending West Coast Conference Champions will take on a 15-team field, hosted by WCC rival Saint Mary's at Bayonet Golf Course (7,117 yards) and Black Horse Golf Course (7,024 yards), both par-72 courses.
REPRESENTING THE DONS: The Dons will be represented by seniors Ji Hwan Park and Joey Toulon junior Taylor Travis and sophomores James Back and Alika Bell.
TOURNAMENT FORMAT: Teams arrive Saturday, September 17 for practice rounds, and on Sunday, the teams will participate in a College-Am event at the two courses. Tournament play kicks off Monday morning at 8 a.m. with 18 holes at Bayonet Golf Course, followed by a second 18 at 1:30 p.m. at Black Horse Golf Course. The tournament concludes with a final 18 at 8 a.m. on Tuesday at Bayonet.
TOURNAMENT FIELD: CSU Northridge, Florida Gulf Coast, Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, Northern Illinois, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, Alabama-Birmingham, Hawai'i, Pacific, Nevada, Oregon, Saint Mary's, San Francisco and Xavier.
PREVIOUS RESULTS AT SAINT MARY'S INVITATIONAL: San Francisco finished last year's Saint Mary's Invitational in eighth place with a two-day total of 599, 29 shots off the tournament winner Notre Dame. Travis Taylor led the Dons with a three-over 147 (T-11), seven shots off the lead. San Francisco won the Saint Mary's Invitational in 2008, which was held at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, Calif., with a three-round total of three-over 855, five strokes ahead of runner-up Wisconsin. Former Don Domingo Jojola was victorious in both the 2008 (six-under 207) and 2009 (seven-under, 209) Saint Mary's Invitational (Poppy Hills).
NEXT UP FOR THE DONS: San Francisco's men's golf team will travel to South Bend, Ind., for the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic at Warren Golf Course on September 26-27.
