SAN FRANCISCO SOCCER GAME NOTES – SAN JOSE STATE – 9/25/11


THIS WEEK FOR THE DONS:
San Francisco returns home for its first home match since September 1 when it welcomes ancient Bay Area rival San Jose State to the Hilltop Sunday, September 25. Kick-off against the Spartans is set for 2:00 PM at Negoesco Stadium and will feature live video streaming on USFDons.com, courtesy of Stretch Internet. USF closes out the non-conference portion of its schedule against SJSU for the second consecutive season.

LAST TIME AGAINST THE SPARTANS:
San Francisco held a 1-0 lead last September 26 at San Jose State, but could not hang on for the win at Spartan Stadium. The Spartans scored a pair of goals in the final four minutes of regulation to secure the victory.

RECENT SERIES HISTORY VS. SJSU:
San Francisco owns a 7-4-0 record against San Jose State since 2000. The Dons have enjoyed little success at Spartan Stadium, going just 1-3-0 in the South Bay. USF has been tough at home, posting a 5-1-0 slate at Negoesco and a 1-0-0 record at neutral sites.

SPECIAL PRE-MATCH EVENT: San Francisco Soccer and the Green & Gold Board will host a special pre-match barbecue prior to the San Jose State game. The cost is $20 per person and features an all-you-can-eat buffet and beer and wine.

GOING YOUNG, REALLY YOUNG:
San Francisco showcased its youth movement once again last Saturday at Stanford. The Dons started four freshmen, five sophomores, one junior and a senior in a hard-fought 2-2 draw.

NEXT WEEK FOR SAN FRANCISCO SOCCER:
San Francisco continues its three-game homestand when it opens the 2011 West Coast Conference schedule Friday, September 30 against Gonzaga. Match time against the Bulldogs is set for 7:00 PM. The Dons then host Portland in a Sunday matinee, set for a 1:00 PM start.

LAST WEEK FOR THE DONS:
San Francisco men's soccer secured a short-handed 2-2 tie last Saturday at Stanford. USF twice battle back from a one-goal deficit and played a man down from the 75th minute through the final whistle of the second overtime. Sophomore midfielder Mauricio Diaz De Leon provided the equalizer and freshman striker Miguel Aguilar scored first for the Dons. Junior goalkeeper Brendan Roslund posted a monster game between the pipes for USF, snaring a career-high 11 saves – four coming in the overtime sessions.

HE SHOOTS HE SCORES:
Sophomore midfielder Mauricio Diaz De Leon and freshman striker Miguel Aguilar share the team goals lead with two apiece. Aguilar owns the points lead with five. Freshman forward Sixto Porras has also scored for the Green and Gold.

THE FINAL LINE OF DEFENSE:
Junior goalkeeper Brendan Roslund enjoyed one of the finest games of his career last Saturday at Stanford in securing a shorthanded 2-2 tie. San Francisco played a man down from the 75th minute on and played the final 90 seconds of the second overtime period with just nine players. Roslund rose to the challenge and stopped a barrage of shots by the Cardinal. The Colorado product made a career-high 11 saves on 23 shots and made a remarkable nine saves after the intermission with four coming in the sudden death overtime frames. In addition, Roslund helped his own cause by assisting on Miguel Aguilar's first half equalizer, becoming the first USF goalkeeper to assist on a goal since standout Geremy Uhl accomplished the feat in 2005.

JUST HOW YOUNG ARE THE DONS? San Francisco welcomes back just seven upperclassmen, headlined by junior goalkeeper and two-year starter Brendan Roslund, junior defender Samir Najmeh, junior midfielder Vinny Caloiaro and senior defender Kevin Orozco. The Dons return eight starters from their 2010 squad, including four sophomores – defender Fred Loechen, midfielders Vegard Karlsen and Mauricio Diaz De Leon and forward Tanner Smith.

NEWCOMERS READY TO MAKE AN IMPACT: USF entered the 2011 season opener with 32 on its active roster, which includes 19 newcomers and returning redshirts. This year's Dons roster features nine international student-athletes.
