SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Sarah Pearson's first place finish and
Jose Madera's record-setting performance propelled the San Francisco cross country program to two team titles at the Bronco Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Dons put on a clinic in their final tune up before WCC Championships, capturing top honors in the women's 5k open run and the men's 8k invitational.
"Sarah ran a very patient race and was very tough on the back end," Head Coach
Helen Lehman-Winters said. "I am so pleased with how competitive she was along with the rest of our women today."
Madera made history with his fifth place finish in the 8k race with a time of 24:06.4, setting a new program record at San Francisco.
"Our men ran solid today and we got just what we needed from this meet," Lehman-Winters remarked. "We trained right through this meet and our men handled the competition well. This was a great tune up in preparation for the conference meet in two weeks."
The women's team placed first with 83 total points, besting San Francisco State (87) and UCLA (121 points). Pearson became the first USF runner this season to finish in first place, as her time of 18:00.31 paced all 197 runners in the 5k open run. Hilary Kigar finished in 14th place (18:32.5), while
Brooke McCandless crossed the finish line in 20th place (18:44.5).
Sophie Curl ran unattached in the women's invite and finished 3rd overall in 17:03.4, a 5k personal best for the senior from Bellingham, Wash.
The men's side placed three runners in the top 20 to finish with 146 points, ahead of UC Davis (158) and Chico State (186). Following Madera were 12th place finisher
Steven Garboden (24:22.1) and 17th place finisher
Ganbileg Bor (24:28).
Jarrett Moore,
Gustavo Mena, and
Eric Causey also helped propel the Dons to their first first place finish of the season.
San Francisco will now prepare for the WCC Championships on October 27 at Pier Park in Portland, Ore.
