SAN FRANCISCO - It was an exciting year for the University of San Francisco Athletic Department, and one that saw a lot of changes and program-defining moments. War Memorial Gym underwent a number of major renovations, Volleyball and Men's and Women's Basketball pulled off huge home upsets, Women's Cross Country and Track and Men's Golf advanced to NCAA competition and LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat held their first full practice of the season at War Memorial Gym. All in all, it was an amazing year for the Dons and only a preview of what's to come.

Gym Renovations

After a slew of renovations in 2009, War Memorial Gym experienced another facelift as flat-screen televisions were mounted in the gym lobbies, LED ribbon board displays were installed and social media branding took center stage. The LED ribbon boards contribute to an enhanced viewing experience and offer a great opportunity for advertisers to reach the San Francisco faithful.

Heat Practice

In January, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat held their first full practice of the 2012 NBA season at War Memorial Gym in preparation for their game against the Golden State Warriors. After the renovations to War Memorial Gym, USF proudly boasts one of the premier indoor basketball facilities in San Francisco, attracting top NBA talent.

Legends of The Hilltop & Men's Basketball Win Over Gonzaga

USF's rich tradition was showcased center stage on "Bill Cartwright Appreciation Night" on February 18, when the Dons hosted then-No. 24 Gonzaga. Fans in attendance received replica Bill Cartwright jerseys and were treated to a thrilling 66-65 Dons victory. Four Dons starters scored in double figures, led by senior Rashad Green's 16 points.

Women's Basketball Win Over Saint Mary's

The women's basketball team's most thrilling victory of the 2012 season came on January 23 against bitter rival Saint Mary's. Senior Rheina Ale's last-second layup gave the Dons a stunning 66-64 victory, behind junior Mel Khlok's career-high 32-point effort.

Women's Volleyball Sweeps No. 16 San Diego

The women's volleyball team kicked off their 2011 WCC schedule in style, sweeping then-No.16 San Diego at home to remain unbeaten at War Memorial Gym. It was the first top-25 win for the program since sweeping then-No. 22 San Diego 3-0 at home in November 2009.

Men's Golf Advances to NCAA Regionals

The men's golf team made history on May 7, advancing to the NCAA West Regional field for the second consecutive season. The back-to-back NCAA bids marked the first time in program history that the team captured consecutive postseason births.

Women's Cross Country

On October 29, the No. 29 USF women's cross country team won their third straight WCC title in commanding fashion, placing all five scoring runners in the top 12, setting the best team-time by 1:38 and breaking the school record for lowest team-time in history (105:01).

Women's Track & Field Sends Three to Nationals

The USF women's track and field team sent its largest contingent in program history to compete in the 2012 NCAA Track & Field Nationals in Des Moines, Iowa. Junior All-American Eva Krchova qualified for the 3000 steeplechase, while seniors Nicole Bowler and Sophie Curl qualified for the women's 1500.
