SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – San Francisco volleyball has added former Israeli National Team Captain and coaching veteran Eyal Zimet to the staff as announced today by head coach Gilad Doron. Zimet brings extensive experience as an elite indoor and outdoor player as well as international coaching experience to USF Volleyball.
"I am very excited to have Eyal join our coaching staff," Doron said. "He brings great knowledge and experience at the college and international levels. He is a great fit and will compliment Ken and myself. In addition to his indoor experience, Eyal puts USF in a position that when we add Sand Volleyball we will have an AVP professional and a top beach coach already on staff. It is a great addition to USF athletics and our volleyball program to have a coach that can share what it takes to win an NCAA Championship."
The Dons finished a solid 2011 season with a 16-13 overall record and look poised to challenge in the tough West Coast Conference. The Dons will return 11 letter-winners and more than 90 percent of its kill tally from 2011. Zimet looks forward to making an impact with a young and talented USF squad.
"I am excited to be joining USF's program at this time," Zimet said. "The level of talent and work ethic is impressive and the team seems poised to improve on the success of last year. I look forward to helping the program achieve all of its short- and long-term goals drawing on my experience as an NCAA student-athlete and years of professional competitions."
PLAYING CAREER
With 22 years of competitive volleyball experience, Zimet spent nine years on the Israeli National Team, including two years as team captain. Zimet then departed his native Israel for the University of Hawaii (Manoa) where he helped the Rainbow Warriors to the 2002 NCAA Championship. A four-year letter-winner as an outside hitter, Zimet served as team captain and was an academic All-American as a senior.
Zimet moved on to the AVP Tour in 2006 and was runner-up for rookie of the year honors. A semifinalist in the 2009 AVP Brooklyn, Zimet finished in the top-10 in the final 2010 team rankings. Zimet represented the United States on the sand overseas, helping his team to the bronze medal in Chennai, India in his third international tournament.
COACHING CAREER
An experienced clinician in both indoor and beach environments, Zimet spent last season serving as the head coach of the Panamanian national beach volleyball team and guided the program to a silver medal in the FIVB Olympic Qualifier. During his AVP career, Zimet developed conditioning and training programs for several tour professionals and served as an advisor for international teams, including Brazil, Canada, Great Britain, Norway, Sweden and Turkey.
Zimet ran the Eyal Zimet Volleyball Camps in West Bengal, India and served as camp director for the Ramah Darom Volleyball Camps in Atlanta. Zimet also served as a clinician at the University of Hawaii and USF volleyball camps.
Zimet graduated from the University of Hawaii in 2004 with a bachelors degree in Information and Computer Science. A four-time Dean's List selection, Zimet is a member of the Screen Actor's Guild (SAG) and served in the Israeli Defense Force (IDF).
