STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of San Francisco women's tennis team opened the 2013 spring season in fine fashion, downing the Pacific Tigers, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at the Hal Nelson Tennis Courts.
Three USF freshman were victorious in their collegiate dual match debuts, with
Andrea Ka,
Sofia Holmberg and
Brooke Irish holding down the top three spots in the Dons' singles lineup, respectively.
According to head coach
Hilary Somers the final score was deceptive, as many of the matches that the Dons pulled out were tightly contested until the end.
“We pulled off three three-set matches, and even the other matches that we won were very close,” said Somers. “We really came out battling, which was great to see, especially for our first match of the season.”
The Dons face a quick turnaround, as they will return to the court Sunday morning for a 10 a.m. match with the University of Texas at El Paso at Golden Gate Park.
“It's tough to turn around that quick when they were out there for so many hours today, especially when you play such a grinding match, both mentally and physically,” said Somers. “We're going to have to push ourselves because it won't come as easily tomorrow.”
