SAN JOSE, Calif. – The University of San Francisco women's tennis team dropped its first match of the 2013 spring season Wednesday afternoon, falling 5-2 to the San Jose State Spartans.
USF pulled out the doubles point in dramatic fashion to open the match. After the No. 3 doubles team of
Brooke Irish and
Marina Nikolic dropped an 8-2 match to SJSU's Julianna Bacelar and Jessica Willett, the No. 1 team of
Andrea Ka and
Sofia Holmberg and the No. 2 team of
Yurie Hashiguchi and
Milica Hadzi-Tanovic squeaked out a pair of 8-7 matches.
The Dons couldn't carry the momentum into singles play, however, as the Spartans went on to take five of the six matches to seal the victory. Freshman
Sofia Holmberg was the lone bright spot for USF on the afternoon, posting a commanding straight set win over Sabastiani Leon Cho, 6-0 and 6-1.
“We were a little flat in the singles,” said USF coach
Hilary Somers. “They came out really strong in the singles so hopefully we can learn from today and prepare better mentally and physically and be ready for Santa Barbara on Sunday.”
USF travels south to Santa Barbara on Feb. 3 for its final road match until late March, a stretch that bookends 11-consecutive home matches at Golden Gate Park.
“It'll be a good trip for the girls to bond a little bit more and have a road trip because we don't have very many road trips,” said Somers. “Hopefully our preparation for that can be a little bit better than it was today.”
